Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2. Rhyming verse and cartoon illustrations introduce young readers to earthquakes. A young boy narrates, telling about the earthquake he was in, how he and his family responded, and what he learned about quakes afterwards. The verse is awkward at times, and the singsong rhythm can be distracting: "I quickly jumped down to the floor/Squeezed underneath my bed/ Away from windows that could break,/ With my hands behind my head." Still, within this framework the author manages to point out several aspects of earthquakes. There are basic safety tips, a list of supplies, an extremely simplified geologic explanation, and some discussion of the varied emotions involved during and after a quake. The illustrations convey some wildness but none of the terror, and exaggerate with mild, but obvious humor. They stop short of the pure silliness that might trivialize a serious subject and complement the emphasis on feelings in the text. There are several excellent factual books on earthquakes, but they are for slightly older readers and tend to focus on science more than feelings. Some children will find the format unappealing; but for others this will be just right as a gentle introduction to a frightening subject.?Steven Engelfried, West Linn Public Library, OR

Review

Genuinely reassuring [We Shake in a Quake] contains many tips for earthquake preparedness, as well as for the ultimately trickier task of managing one's emotions before, during and after. -- Los Angeles Times Book Review, Sept. 22, 1996

This review is from: We Shake in a Quake (Hardcover)
This well written rhyming book provides a non-threatening way to introduce your child to a most frightening subject. It guides the child in a clear and fun manner as to how to act and react during an earthquake. The illustrations are adorable and add a new dimension of understanding for your child to more fully comprehend the movement and vibrations accompanying an earthquake. Very highly recommended!! I look forward to Ms. Givon's next book and hope she continues to tackle difficult subjects for children in a way which helps them to come to terms with life's frightening moments
