Excellent progression from the Swamp-Country-Blues-Rock muse Dax Riggs,

This review is from: We Sing of Only Blood Or Love (Audio CD)
Dax has come along way, and leaves no room for disappointment. He started turning more in the direction of a Bluesy-Rock hybrid in his last album "We Are Night Sky", and it continues its journey in "We Sing Of Only Blood Or Love". There's still a strong undercurrent of his own eerie melodies drawn from the strength and heart of the Bayous, and his unmistakable voice is that force which binds the very universe together. My only true disappointment came when the album was over. But that's what repeat is for.Basically, it's an excellent album, give it a listen to for yourself. If you enjoyed the direction he was heading with "We Are Night Sky", then you'll love this album. And any hardcore Agents of Oblivion or Deadboy And The Elephantmen fans should be able to appreciate his poetry in music as well. And despite what is listed in the album info, it actually has 3 additional tracks, 13) "The Wall of Death", 14) "Scarlett of Heaven Nor Hell" and 15) "Dethbryte".

This is a good listen, and the man can sing. Pity he didn't put the best tracks from 'We are Night Sky' with the choice numbers here. That would be a great album, and maybe Dax wouldn't be running around the country as an opening act, instead of being the headliner. 'We sing....' starts well, sags a bit in the middle and finshes strongly. The twisted acoustic and acoustic/electric blooze work best for me, highlighting the voice and the lyrics. Three and a half stars, because I don't think Dax has improved on 'We are Night Sky' by having a full band on this new album.

The pure emotion and power in Dax's voice is captivating on this record. Most of the songs are short but very sweet. Would have loved to hear longer variations of the songs but hey, it is what it is and I can't complain too much. A mix of various styles of music, while relying mostly on straight up rock, is very pleasant to the ears. 5 Stars all the way.

Pound for pound this is one of the best albums ever created. The overall mood is so bleak but yet so much fun, there are times when I put this album in my truck and listen to it for weeks. The songs are all kinda short but that just makes it a good "on the way to work album" I wish Dax Riggs would make a series of solo albums like this one, because this imho is his masterpiece. Great album

I've been following Dax Riggs since Acid Bath. He is an exceptional artist. I haven't heard anything by him I didn't like. To hear him go from acid bath, to his solo music just proves how great his range is! If you haven't already, check out Acid Bath, Agents of Oblivion and Deadboy and the Elephantmen. His newest solo cd is pretty great too!

Dax Riggs,

This is the debut "solo" album from wondering dark soul Dax Riggs. Unfortunately for Dax even with more exposure outside the underground metal scene in which he made his name, he seems destined to fly under the radar. 'We sing of only Blood or Love' marks the fourth official, post-Acid Bath album Dax has released, following the swampy rock of Agents of Oblivion and two albums under the Deadboy and the Elephantmen moniker. His last album 'We Are the Night Sky' marked a change in direction as the second, though only loosely linked Deadboy and the Elephantmen album. He stripped the band down to a guitar & drum duo, apparently seeking a more straightforward path. The album was one of the most positively received in his career but unfortunately it lacked consistency, punch and variety. This time around, Dax returns with a short and punchy album filled with trademark, dark acoustic numbers and bluesy rock. Dax has effectively cut the fat on this album and reintroduced a strong backing band to tear through the varied cuts. The album as a whole seems a little short, however, the quality is much stronger and the production and musicianship is a much needed step-up. Dax is at his best on this album when he lets loose and rocks out, displaying his unique, soulful vocals and impressive range. Several songs display great potential and end far too quickly, a reflection that perhaps he was a little too concise with his song-writing. There are some forgettable songs but the album succeeds more often than it falls flat. Strong cuts include the energetic, blues-rock of 'Radiation Blues', the swirling 'Spinning Song', warbly rocker 'Truth In the Dark' and the incredibly catchy and far too brief 'Scarlet of Heaven Nor Hell'. Dax's incredible vocals carry the album, but the swampy, Louisiana-fledged dark vibes, bluesy overtones and strong musicianship stand tall. 'We sing of only Blood or Love' is another solid offering and return to form for one of rock's best, and sadly unknown artists.

This is a collector's item. The full length CD came with the record. If you're a hardcore fan, buy the record. All songs are good. Words and music are crafted to perfection.Dax is the best artist ever.

Dax Riggs makes me almost forget everything else I have ever heard. "We Sing of Only Blood or Love" is no exception. After listening to "Living is Suicide" about twenty kajillion times on his MySpace page, I was hoping the rest of this album would be just half as good. Well, my friend, it most certainly is. I know, the hardcore Acidbath fans (and even a few Agents fans) are gonna dismiss this as Dax continuing to "sell out." Please. Dax has the ability to create songs powerful enough to MOVE you, be they sludge metal from Kite String or the poignant new "Dethbryte" or "The Terrors of Nightlife." The man has an uncanny talent for melody and insanely creative lyrics. "I laid alone at the devils feet, and I've placed a rose between the angel's teeth" says it all-he fronted the most creative metal band of the nineties and has moved on to... let's just wait and see. Thank you Dax.

What more can I say. He keeps getting more and more creative. The fans love his work and he continues to tour for them. I bought this on record and got a CD with it. Bonus track was on it. I've got the chance to see his solo show and was just blown away once again. Get this on LP as well. Its worth it for the extra material. 15 great songs on this CD. I cant wait to hear what he puts out next. Surfing the web on utube gave me some insight on what's to come. So get ready, it's good.

the songs are too brief. He has undeniable talent as a lyricist and singer. My main problem with dax is that he cannot let the music breathe. The songs are too short. While there are some gems on here, I just can't help but feel a little put off that it's just over half an hour in length. The good songs are like little flashes that burn out too quick. I've seen him live multiple times, the live show is the same, fantastic but just too short. If I'm paying $15 for your cd or tickets to your show, I want to be rocked! And rocked for a while.Don't get me wrong this is a great cd. I'll continue to support dax and go see him live. But if your cd's are going to be e.p. length then I'd like to be charged e.p. prices. |
