4.0 out of 5 stars Three cheery dragon tales perfect for the holiday, December 21, 2005

This review is from: We Three Dragons: A Trio of Dragon Tales for the Holiday Season (Tor Fantasy) (Mass Market Paperback)
In most of literature dragons are creatures to be feared- fire and destruction made manifest. In other stories, they're beasts of burden, used for their wings to take us into the skies. However, in these stories, the dragons are as multi-dimensional as humans. They have the full range of emotions, of hopes, of fears, of quirks, and the full range of Christmas Spirit. That is what further sets this book apart, is not only do dragons star in this book, but the three well written stories are all centered around Christmas.

The Knight, Before Christmas by Jeff Grubb is a brilliant retelling of the Night Before Christmas with a delightful twist ending that's sure to bring a smile to your face.

The Christmas Dragon is a beautiful story of man and nature, set in cold mountains with humans and dragons staring. Over all, it's well done and an interesting view. It reminds me more than a little of The Grinch.

Wrathclaw's Wyrmtide by Ed Greenwood is about redemption, and is very analogous to A Christmas Carol, and is my favorite of the book. The characters are detailed, and the ending is brilliant.

I recommend this highly to readers of all ages. It is a perfect holiday book for those of us who like fantasy, or someone who just wants a holiday story that's a little different than normal.

We Three Dragons is a brief anthology of Christmas-themed stories focused upon dragons. Each of the three stories comes from a different author and takes place in their own imagined world. Jeff Grubb's intro story is the best and also the shortest. It does a great job retelling The Night Before Christmas, though its attempt at a twist ending does not really surprise anyone who's read fantasy stories before. This one is my favorite of the book. The second story, The Christmas Dragon, gives us a tale of people unable to learn from their mistakes until they've been made again and again and again... It's a touch like How the Grinch Stole Christmas, but with a lot more gnashing of teeth and destroying a village. It's an OK concept, but the proofreading and overall editing left a LOT to be desired. For instance, there are two dragons in this story, and the author apparently intended for one to be referred to at the beginning, but he refers to both alternately, and the second one has two different spellings for its name, leaving the reader unsure which it was supposed to be. Maybe this does not bother others, but it always takes down the overall quality for me. The third story comes from Ed Greenwood and is the second best of the book. It's an interesting version of A Christmas Carol, where an ancient and cruel and heartless dragon takes the place of Scrooge. What's missing is any replacement for Marley, and without that it's not all it might have been. Still, it's a love story at its heart and one worth reading. The book is a fast read at under 190 pages, but for the cover price it's a touch on the expensive side for the small page count.
