Editorial Reviews

Johnny Cash influenced a great variety of musicians and it was never more apparent than on Friday, April 20, 2012 at The Moody Theater in Austin, TX. The special concert and 80th-birthday tribute, We Walk the Line: A Celebration of the Music of Johnny Cash, featured an all-star list of talent not only celebrating the life and legacy of Johnny Cash, but also paying tribute to Cash, his music, his roots and his heritage.

The two and a half hour show featured a wide spectrum of legendary musicians including Outlaw country pioneers (Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson), contemporary icons (Ronnie Dunn, Evanescence s Amy Lee) and Grammy Award Winners (Pat Monahan of Train and The Carolina Chocolate Drops). An all-star band led by GRAMMY Award-winning Don Was which included Buddy Miller, Kenny Aronoff, Ian McLagen, and Greg Leisz served to back these once-in-a-lifetime performances. We Walk the Line: A Celebration of the Music of Johnny Cash features several remarkable pairings such as Willie Nelson and Sheryl Crow performing "If I Were A Carpenter," one of several duets recorded by Cash and his wife, June Carter Cash. Pat Monohan and Shelby Lynne trade verses on "It Ain' t Me Babe," Kris Kristofferson joins Jamey Johnson for "Sunday Morning Comin' Down," both returning with Willie Nelson and Shooter Jennings for "The Highwayman."

The lesser known performers who were earlier in the program were the better performers. I liked Brandi Carlile, Amy Lee and especially the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Worth the price of the album to me, just for these three acts.

Very disappointing. For those who love and remember the original Cash recordings, most of these performances will be disappointing and uninspiring. The entire performance was shot with strong blue lighting which doesn't help the video quality. The sound recording - which is listed as PCM 5.1, Dolby 5.1 and PCM Uncompressed Stereo - all sounds bad - with a lot of apparent echo and ambience added to the recording. Anyone interested in an authentic tribute to Cash should check out the Cash Music Festival 2011 DVD recorded at the Arkansas State University - a benefit concert to restore his boyhood home. That DVD has better performances and better recording.

First of all... Contrary to the other reviewer's comment about the whole thing being shot in "blue light"... duh... it's a live concert, not a made-for-tv production.

Next... the performances are plenty inspiring... hence the title of this review. The highest form of flattery for a musician must be for others to want to perform his songs. Each artist puts their own twist on JC's songs. Almost every performance is outstanding in it's own way, with the exception of the one that thankfully did not end up on the cd... Matthew McConaughey's version of "The Man Comes Around". He murdered it. JC rolled on that one. Pathetic, insulting.

Standouts... Brandi Carlisle, Pat Monahan, AMY LEE!!!, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Lucinda Williams, Iron & Wine, and the ultimate standout.... THE CAROLINA CHOCOLATE DROPS!!!

So, this is fabulous, and all I can say to the previous reviewer is... lighten up! Oh, and also, buy the cd!
