Laws of Good Speech for Children and Adults, June 11, 2001
This review is from: We Want Life (Hardcover)
My children and I have read this book twice, and we are starting on our third round. The laws of evil speech are complex, and seemingly contradictory. Yisroel Greenwald has made a difficult subject lots of fun. His book is filled with illustrations, parables, and cartoons. Though this would be classified as a childrens book, adults will benefit mightlily from the easy-to-follow rules about speaking gossip - 'loshen-hara', making-things-up about other people - 'motzi-shem-ra', and tale-bearing - 'richulus'.
By far the most popular section in our house is the tale of Dovid Bigmouth, who desires to spread malicious speech wherever he can. Two intrepid crusaders, young boys, try to stop Big Mouth, even as he ties them down and makes them listen to evil speech records.
This book teaches the right things each step of the way. Your children will learn about the animating ideas of Psalms, and the great rabbi, the Chofetz Chaim. A wonderful book, and it makes a wonderful gift.
