5.0 out of 5 stars From a former vegan of 5 years...
This is an amazing book. I read it back in 1997 after I attended a lecture by the author. Although I was vegan for 5 years and vegetarian for 2 years before that, I switched immediately to this diet. And that's the surprising part because I was so against meat eating on both a social basis as well as health basis. You would never catch me reading anything by an author...

2.0 out of 5 stars Unscientific and messy
This book provides only anecdotes and results from Aajonus's personal experience. It contains very little useful information unless you're willing to completely trust Aajonus, though he provides little reason to do that either.

Aajonus's second book The Recipe for Living Without Disease, on the other hand, provides verifiable reasons for choosing the Primal...

This is an amazing book. I read it back in 1997 after I attended a lecture by the author. Although I was vegan for 5 years and vegetarian for 2 years before that, I switched immediately to this diet. And that's the surprising part because I was so against meat eating on both a social basis as well as health basis. You would never catch me reading anything by an author who recommended any other type of diet because I was certain of my beliefs.

So there I am walking by a seminar room in a shopping center back in 1997, and notice a sign describing a talk by Aajonus. For a laugh, since it sounded so absurd, I decided to pop in and listen for a few minutes. For the next hour, he described what he had been through in terms of his health challenges and what he did to overcome them. I walked out of there a different person and have stayed on the diet for over six and a half years from that day.

When I really think about it, this philosophy really is an extension of being a vegan/vegetarian. Vegans know that animal products are bad for the body, but the distinction here is that cooked meat, pasteurized milk/cheese/butter and cooked eggs are what is bad for you. In their raw form they are extremely healthful, and I have had nothing but major improvement in my health eating this way.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book will make you think long and hard about your diet, July 27, 2001
This review is from: We Want to Live (Hardcover)
This book explains thoroughly the effects of processed food, cooking and nutrition. I dont agree with Mr. Vonderplanitz on Vitamin Pills but otherwise his book is very interesting.

Readers of this book will be exposed to ideas well outside the mainstream. Whether they accept it or not is up to them to analyze for themselves.

The book is engagingly well written. Half of it is in a Novel Format where Mr.Vonderplanitz explains how he has been affected by foods. Like him curing his son of a terminal illness, or him curing himself of a whole range of "incurable" diseases.

5.0 out of 5 stars Improved My Health Tremendously, August 11, 2003

This review is from: We Want to Live (Hardcover)
My body was in dreadful shape after years of being a vegetarian and raw fooder. AV's approach to raw makes more sense than any raw food vegetarian diet. I have been eating raw chicken, beef, milk, butter, honey, etc. for over three years. My body is much stronger. I look better than all my friends my age. THANK YOU AAJONUS FOR THIS BOLD WORK!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Thriller of a Diet Book?, April 18, 2000
This review is from: We Want to Live (Hardcover)
Unlike most books of this genre, Vonderplanitz (not the name he was born with) writes with a flair almost worthy of a Crichton or a Ludlum.

Drawing upon the true life experiences of saving two terminally ill people, first himself, and, 18 years later, his son, Vonderplanetz has created a page-turner the envelops the reader by the end of the first chapter, if not the first page!

His revolutionary ideas (and the resulting cures of dying people) are beyond what even your average new-age health fanatic knows. In fact, until you begin to understand the logic, you might rebel at the preposterous assumptions he lays at your feet. Good! Because when you do understand, you will never feel the same about illness and dying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes the connection between diet and health crystal clear, July 8, 1998
This review is from: We Want to Live (Hardcover)
Having studied Cayce and other nutritionists for years, this book has given me the motivation to FINALLY make the transition to a TRULY healthy diet. The book blends a well written narrative of Aajonus' curing his son - doomed to death by the medical establishment - with facts on the connections between food and specific illnesses. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for anyone trying to strengthen the intuitive wisdom of their body's own nutritional needs. Shows the links between processed foods, heated fats and sweets to our bodies' inability to allow the natural healing flow that is our birthright.

5.0 out of 5 stars Raw and fascinating, February 16, 2005
This review is from: We Want to Live (Hardcover)
A fascinating book by someone who dares to challenge the medical establishment. Made me aware of biases I didn't even know I had. Helps me understand why I had so many problems when I used to be on a raw vegan diet. I have already developed a much healthier respect for raw fats -- and I never even really thought of avocado, coconut, soaked nuts, raw milk, etc., as raw fats.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing! The book is a revelation! I wish I had it sooner., January 15, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: We Want to Live (Hardcover)
The book is a revelation. The first reading left me astonished. I've been reading it over and over, absorbing more with each pass. It is one of the most impressive books I have ever read for several reasons. First, the idea of presenting your own story in "novelette" form was a stroke of genius. It connects the reader to Aajonus and to the work that he is doing in an emotional way. The second half of the book then answers so many of the questions that arise in the first half, in a format that makes practical information very accessible. I can not praise this work enough. Everyone who desires health should have a copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Do not continue eating without reading this book!, January 21, 2004

This review is from: We Want to Live (Hardcover)
I have been studying Nutrition and Diets looking for the answer to good health for almost a decade. Every single book including Atkins, The Zone, Carbohydrate Addicts, Eat Right For Your Type, and more seemed to be missing something when I tried them. I wasn't looking to lose weight, I was looking to be healthy.

This book fills in that missing element. Some of the information in this book may be hard for you to swallow (literally), but I guarantee that if you read this book and apply the information contained within, your life will never be the same.

Do not miss out on this wonderful opportunity to learn the truth about food, diet and health.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Raw Food Revolution, March 24, 2002

This review is from: We Want to Live (Hardcover)
I thought this book was outstanding! The diet mentioned in the book helped me recover after 20 years of ill-health-BUT I found the book a bit too new-agey and my former (very serious) health problems were only got rid of completely once I turned to a fully Raw,Palaeolithic version of this diet, by excluding all veggie juice and all raw-dairy(like a majority of RPDers I have a serious food-intolerance/allergy towards raw dairy ) , by minimising my intake of honey, fruit and solid veg to some extent , and by replacing some of the lean muscle-meats(except for fish/fowl/shellfish and some muscle-meats from wild animals) for the nutrient-richer (raw) organ-meats(especially the fattier organ-meats such as bone-marrow/suet/tongue etc.). I also found that IF(Intermittent Fasting) worked far better in terms of combatting fatigue than Aajonus' recommendation to eat constantly throughout the day.I should also mention that AV's "high-meat" was especially effective re increased energy/concentration, and mood.

If you want to avoid spending the second half of your life in a state of constant pain and misery,I suggest you read this book.
