How did I get into Canasta? I can't really remember, actually. It must have been on the blogs, when I was in my crazy "let me find all kinds of new music!" phase. A few of their tracks sounded pretty good, so I decided to go ahead and buy the album. After a few listens, it sounded moderately good...

Until one day, the strength of the first track, Microphone Song, dawned on me. Very few songs have that sort of scope of musical orchestration and still maintain that level of catchiness. One by one, I have fallen in love with every single song on the album. There are no weak tracks, as each seems to be forged with phenomenal musicianship and a certain undeniable charm. Vocalist Matt Priest has a smooth, clean voice, and does a great job carrying the feel of the song, although at any given moment he could be singing over a lush sonic web of piano, clarinet, violin, guitar, and drums.

Canasta, as I write this, holds the top eleven positions on my most-played list in iTunes. One never runs out of new things to hear with each spin of the disc, which is a fun ride from start to finish with no slow moments. You will not regret purchasing this album, and, in fact, they could indeed be the Next Big Thing.

I first saw them live at Schuba's in Chicago. I fell in love! My husband and I proceeded to follow them around the city that summer and we have been fans ever since. They have a great sound and talented musicians. They are really nice people too. I can't wait to see what they will do next.
