3.5 YA entry to a crowded field.

I thought this was decent. But I felt the too quick shift as one "scene/act" ended and another began. For such short vignettes all inter-related the book ended up dragging a bit. And while detail oriented, this in the end is not a novel. It is a couple of works that tie together. And in the end this could have been much better than it was simply because I felt some of the entries simply do not serve well with the others. Note that some others do a good job of putting ancillary efforts to their creations out there. Yes it serves a profit to have people plunk down a buck to three for a short story that often is less than a hundred pages. But is also gives the author a chance to explore a single idea that doesn't demand a whole novel as well as build and expand on that world. Brian McClellan and Django Wexler immediately come to mind as two newer authors getting attention in the fantasy market right now. It also helps that a few of the words are free. Authors offering them either on personal websites or through monthly free genre oriented e magazines.

I think a single story would have been more engaging or a collection. The attempt to take the latter and serve it up as a kind of former just wasn't as complete as I would have liked.

This is a horror version of the supernatural. A coven of five had convened with other supernatural agents to overthrow this world and allow the seven fallen angels to take over the Earth. The two noble members turned on the common folk who were given over to the Church authorities for torture and burning. This book follows the descendants and those who have come across them across the years following. The book pulls no imagery. The specifics of witch terror and torture are specified. Also discussed in harrowing detail are the activities of these agents of evil and the picture is disquieting. For all of this, the prose is strangely lyrical and evokes another world beyond our ken. The characters are in fact multidimensional for all the emphasis on the other side. It is a book that I recommend to readers of the genre, and those who are strong of will.

I loved this book. I wish I had known the genealogy was at the back. I had a bit of a hard time with the family lines but I kept on. Such a different kind of scary, a bad dream that won't fade away type of dread. I will read this again.
