I love how Shonen Knife makes this song their own with no excuses, but doesn't make it too loud or jolting for the casual listener who isn't familiar with their music. You don't have to try too hard to appreciate this fun version of the classic tune with the band's cute Japanese lilt. (Although I suspect they might not appreciate being called cute!)

No, I've never heard Shonen Knife, but according to Wikipedia, the group is an all-female Japanese pop-punk band formed in Osaka, Japan, in 1981. Heavily influenced by 1960s girl groups, pop bands, The Beach Boys, and early punk rock acts, such as the Ramones, the trio crafts stripped-down songs expressing infectious melodies and simplistic, exuberant lyrics sung both in Japanese and English.

"Infectious" and "exuberant" are the right words to describe this very enjoyable version of an old Christmas favorite. It went straight to my Christmas playlist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cute, December 22, 2011

Finally we get something fun! It's rather strange that an all-female group would call itself "Shonen" anything, since "shonen" means "young man." It's also obvious that the singers learned the song phonetically and have no idea what the words mean. But who cares about any of that? It sounds good, and it makes you smile. Enough said.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shonen Knife rocks!, January 3, 2012

Shonen Knife rocks!!! I got to see them live in a little club in San Jose CA and loved their sound. They are an interesting juxtaposition of delicate Asian female with a hard rock sound.
I had some technical issues trying to figure out how to use the MP3 cloud but muddled through. It was an iD-10-T issue. Free music?! Merry Christmas to me!!
