I happen to think that the eighties were a high point in musical history, coming out of the simple two-guitars-and-a-drum era of rock and roll, delving into more technical details coming from synthesizers and whatnot. Since then, new bands have reverted to the bland unartistic style of earlier decades. My first impression with this band was that it sounded like a rebirth of the era that I love.

Petree first caught my eye because it looked like a rip-off of Petra, at first. As it turns out, there's absolutely no connection, there. The Christian bookstore that I found it in had no means of previewing the disc, so I ended up not buying it there, though I almost bought it just for the attractive cover. Seriously, though, you don't know what you've bought until you've taken it home and opened it up, and by then it's too late to return the thing. I did manage to find some previews on another website, later, so I navagated to Amazon to make the purchase.

I must say that Petree offers a catchy beat with plenty of ear candy, the finer points that can't come from any acoustic instrument. As a secular work, I would rate it a full five stars. Generally, though, I shop for music with lyrics that I can relate to on a deeper level, and this one mostly missed the boat. It has one song with a deeply spiritual nature, Getting To Know Me, and the rest are a mile wide and an inch deep. They sound nice, but they're not very moving.

I gotta hand it to Petree, though. He/they have talent. It's just a question of whether they can find their market niche (or be found by it) while they still can.
