5.0 out of 5 stars This is the commencement speech we should have heard.
Mary Schmich's funny, wise, and oh-so-true faux commencement address is a joy to read over and over again, and a great gift for recent graduates or to folks just needing a lift. If you are old enough to appreciate the wisdom of her words, you'll nod your head and smile. If too young, listen to what she says, and trust all of us, wear sunscreen. You'll thank us later.

2.0 out of 5 stars This is a song
I bought this book thinking that it was a little bit more than the song "Wear Sunscreen." This book is only The words to the song. It is a great book, I just wanted to make sure that you knew that it is the words to the song and nothing else.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great gift for graduate, June 27, 2007

I work at a high school so know the marjority of the graduates but there are always a select few who I become close to over the 4 years they are in our building. I was looking for a little something to give them as a graduation gift when I came across this book. It is a great gift for the graduate with lots of helpful and sometimes silly advice.

5.0 out of 5 stars FIVE STARS ARE NOT ENOUGH FOR THIS BOOK!!!!, March 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Wear Sunscreen: A Primer for Real Life (Hardcover)
Initially, I was skeptical of Ms. Schmich's inspired, heartfelt advice for living. But after friends convinced me that this was not just another "get rich quick" scheme, I really started to listen ...and listen! ... and Listen!!!! Ms. Schmich's advice has the kind of downhome wholeness and hermeneutical quidditas I've never experienced from any writer except Ayn Rand who is still my all time favorite. I don't think there's any amount of money you could pay to make this book too expensive. And I can't believe I'm the only reader who has had similar experiences???

3.0 out of 5 stars So far, you're all right, March 30, 1999

Each reviewer who has posted a review prior to mine is absoultely correct, each in his or her own way. Yes, this book is probably an attempt to cash in on a good thing. Yes, this book is mostly seventh grade advice. Yes, this book dispenses advice that has a down-home, wholesome quality to it. And, yes, the book makes for good listening. So you're all right. But what I think some folks who have reviewed the book have missed is that, finally, somebody put down in words that are well-written, almost lyrical in nature, some really good, sound advice. You can't argue with her--Ms. Smich is right on all accounts. Or she isn't. I guess it doesn't really matter since she even includes a disclaimer. What really does matter is that the book, and consequently the article, will only be what you want it to be. If you enjoyed "Desiderata" because it sings to you or because you found one bit that meant something to you, you're likely to get something out of Ms. Smich's text and might want to have a nicely bound version of it like this book. If you didn't, you probably won't.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trust him on the sunscreen, February 4, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Wear Sunscreen: A Primer for Real Life (Hardcover)
This book has THE best points and views that a person can make. From love to living he covers it all. Now that high school is coming to an end I really get the entire effect of what he is really trying to say, and Finally someone put the basics of life down in words. Its everything they never taught us in school and everything we ever just wanted to hear from someone. It makes you think about life and how short or long it is. As he says,"The race is long, but in the end its only with yourself."

5.0 out of 5 stars lovely read, June 8, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is a great gift for graduates, people growing up, & yourself. The best advice is simple. No wonder Vonnegut was fine with people thinking he wrote it, although he was honest & said the credit belonged to someone else. I'm glad to see Mary Schmich is getting her credit.
