5.0 out of 5 stars Wearable Art, April 10, 2000
By
Maria da Conceicao's well-written and lavishly illustrated book shows her unique wearable art that combines hand and machine piecing, quilting, knitting, and a variety of embellishment techniques. This book lives up to its subtitle "Innovative Designs for Clothing and Fibers". As a fiber artist who also combines many techniques in garments and quilts, this book encouraged me to expand my experimentation and refine my own personal style. I recommend this book to anyone looking for inspiration in the area of wearable art.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reference book, June 3, 2009
Great reference book for all fiber and fabric artists. I checked out this book from the library many years ago and finally was able to buy a copy so now I always have it on hand. The projects in the book can also be used by someone without a sewing machine because she does quite a bit of hand stitching along with using the sewing machine. Maria's ideas are inspirational and timeless for those that do not want to become fashion victims or followers. The color photographs display her work beautifully whereby you can see her mastery of design, color, fabric, etc. Art created with ones hands usually lasts from season to season and somehow never looks dated or tired.

It is worth the hunt for Wearable Art by Maria Da Conceicao. My copy is an out of print library book that I picked up from Amazon for a few dollars. Great find!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Wearable Art book from 1979, May 9, 2008
I have two copies of this book, as I was afraid I wouldn't be able to find it again. I had a hard enough time finding it in the first place. I saw a copy a friend had - this was in the 1990's - and wanted my own. Before the internet, locating a special book was no easy trick! Luckily I was in Seattle, so one appeared in a large used book store. This is a book that shows the wearable art work of Maria Da Conceicaio and it's enchanting. I still think the most innovative and delightful wearable art clothing was being made in the 70s and early 80s, and this book backs me up in that opinion. Although some of it is dated, I think many of her original designs stand up to the test of time. For that matter, the styles are coming back around as vintage clothing anyway. Although this is not the standard, ready to wear that you might find as 1970s vintage. She does a lot with painstaking hand work - not my thing, as I'm a sewing machine user myself, but I can appreciate the work and it's really the designs that are what make the book what it is. I can't say enough good about it.
