Civil Twilight is amazing in their musicianship, voice, lyrical arrangements and musical sound.

Sometimes it's a little too uncanny, but it still works.

On first listen, I wasn't really getting it. The first three songs on the album are SO different from what everyone knows them to be. Different is actually an understatement. This was a completely different band. Once you move through the album you get more of who Civil Twilight really is. They've stayed true to their sound but it's matured a great amount.
Their first release was criticized for every song sounding close to the same which I could see how people thought that. There's no way this album can be criticized for that. Every song has it's own voice and there's no running together and very few breathy vocals from the lead singer.
My only complaint is that the album isn't longer. This band is really good for producing epic songs that span 5+ minutes and this album doesn't have ANY of that. Not even one song over 5 minutes. I would've liked to see a few more songs on the album because this band doesn't produce "fluff" songs.
I think it's safe to say that after the second listen, I fell in love with this album. It's got so many great songs and the band has moved in such a great direction.

This album is amazing. His voice really reminds me of Tom York from Radiohead (a little better actually) and the style is similar too but a little less weird and more earthy. Every single song on this album is quality.

I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned in the reviews here so far, but yes, this band sounds a LOT like U2. I mean that in a very good way. Sometimes it's a little too uncanny, but it still works. Steven McKellar's voice is at times indistinguishable from Bono's. Andrew McKellar captures the shimmering guitars of Edge perfectly. I don't think they're really trying to copy them though. The influence is clear, but if that's what Steven's voice sounds like, that's what it sounds like. And if that's the guitar tone Andrew likes, that's fine (I shoot for that tone myself for a lot of stuff). Whether it's intentional or not, taking one of the greatest bands of the last 25 years as an inspiration is not a bad place to start.

The album is beautiful. There really isn't a bad song on it to my ears, so I won't run through each one. I do enjoy the single, Fire Escape, quite a bit, but playing the album through from the start to the end is a very pleasant way to spend 42 and a half minutes.

Part of me says they ought to try to carve out something a little more distinct for themselves, but a larger part of me says don't fix what isn't broken. Too many people are quick to write off a band if they think it sounds derivative of another. But all bands have been influenced by others, and there's nothing wrong with that. The bottom line is that Civil Twilight has created a fantastic record.

Love this band. Musically brilliant.
I have heard them compared to Cold Play and U2.... and yes I would agree but they are oh so different too.

Give the album a whirl once or twice and I'm sure you will really enjoy it.
They are even better live. So if you ever get a chance go and hear for yourself.

I bought this knowing nothing about this group. I fell in love with the clips on Itunes and just had to have it. My kids are constantly putting on in the morning when getting ready school.

This is a masterpiece. I find myself playing this songs in my head over and over and craving them. They have found their sound, and I wonder where has this band been all my life. There is not a single "filler" song. Steve's voice blows everybody else out of the water. I do agree with the reviewer that says it is a bit like Radiohead without the weird stuff and does sound just like Bono at times, but CT have their own sound, which for some reason has touched something in my soul. But there are also songs, like Holy Water, that are clubby and danceable, there are upbeat tunes, it is not all gloom and doom album, but it does make you think. These guys are rare in imbuing their songs with emotions, passion, poetry and rock and roll. Sounds implausible but it does work and you will know this band is destined for bigger things. You will only regret that it isn't longer. Cannot wait for their third album. Watch this space, because word is spreading fast.

True story. I have both played with and booked Civil Twilight in Colorado. Fantastic bunch of guys. However, BEFORE I ever met them I bought this album and hands down Holy Weather is what convinced me that they were something to reckon with.

Mainstream radio hits "River" and "Fire Escape" are fantastic songs on their own, but within the context of the entire album, you just seem to realize they are just two amazing songs amidst a handful more. The album has a feel to it, kind of like the feeling I get listening to Radiohead's OK Computer. Am I saying this album compares? No. Radiohead is a far more mature band that used a lot more resources to create that masterpiece - BUT for Civil Twilight's sophomore album to remind me of that is something to be said.

Lots of emotional effort and a lot of artistic license went into this. Hands down, the whole album could be in a Academy Award winning film and then win it's own award for best score. THAT is what this is. Pure art and very well developed. Keep an eye on Civil Twilight. They may be overshadowed at the moment, but when they break free, they are going to be a name people respect within the music industry.

Buy it. Two or three times. Give it to everyone you know that loves music.
