The serious, rational side to the 2012 discussion,

This review is from: Severe Space Weather Events--Understanding Societal and Economic Impacts: A Workshop Report (Paperback)
Many people scoff that 2012 is nothing special ... that it just happens to coincide with a Mayan red letter date. What the scientists are saying in this report is that solar maximum on Cycle 24 could end up being momentous because our electronic society can't buy enough surge protection for a Coronal Mass Ejection leading to a Carrington Event. Unfortunately, they are probably correct. Very few of us live in self-sufficient homes or communities. Unless you're Amish or a self-prophessed Luddite, this is a great read on what the future could hold for us. Keep your candles handy.
