Editorial Reviews

From Kirkus Reviews

An overview of weather in The Nature Company Guide series that is rather holistic in its approach, yet difficult to access for the solid information its audience will need. Burroughs, Richard Whitaker, Ted Robertson, Eleanor Vallier- Talbot, and Bob Crowder each write one or more of the eight chapters on ``The Nature of Weather,'' ``Weather-watching Through the Ages,'' etc. Topics within each chapter are treated in double- page spreads of seven or eight short but difficult paragraphs accompanied by several small full-color photographs, drawings, and charts, further set off by proverbs, poems, and quotations pertaining to weather. The authors include intriguing information, but much of it can be found only by leafing through the text and not in the combination glossary/index, e.g., an excellent ``Table of International Weather Symbols'' is not listed, nor is a chart naming clouds, nor one on the layers of the atmosphere. The foreword recommends taking this handsome volume along on a picnic; it's true that it is more of a browsing book, with limited usefulness in the classroom. (photos, charts, diagrams, maps, tables, bibliography, glossary/index. (Nonfiction. 12+) -- Copyright ©1996, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

More About the Author

Sally Morgan is a leading author of children's information books. She has written more than 250 titles, covering wildlife, natural history, science, geography, and environmental topics. She writes for all ages from first readers through to 16+ readership as well as books aimed at family readership.

Sally read Natural Sciences at Cambridge which was followed by several years of research into the restoration of derelict land. She then taught biology for a few years before turning to writing. With her love of the natural world and her concerns about the loss of habitats worldwide, it was not surprising that she chose to write about wildlife and environmental issues.

She is lucky enough to own a small organic farm in Somerset. When she is not writing she can be found on the farm looking after her rare breed poultry, sheep and pigs or weeding the kitchen garden! Conservation is important to her and the farm is managed to improve biodiversity. Keen to connect people with their food, Sally has set up a small education centre on the farm, where people can learn about smallholding, butchery and other rural skills.

4.0 out of 5 stars Anything you wanted to know about weather!, April 4, 2000
By A Customer
This book has wonderful photos of every type of weather from clouds, sun dogs, rainbows, hail, freezing rain, and on and on. Each description is only a page long and includes a photograph. It's easy to understand and doesn't get into too much detail. My 6 year old, although she didn't understand the text, got this book out of the library and liked it so much she wanted a copy of her own -- she loved looking at the different photos. And as an adult, I had to agree with her, it's great just to thumb through as well as read the specifics.

5.0 out of 5 stars How Does Weather Work?, April 5, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Weather (Nature Company Discoveries Library) (Hardcover)
I love this book all about weather, how it occurs, what makes our planet hum. It has helped me read the sky far more clearly & understand daily forecasts. It is filled with gorgeous photographs & easily interpreted diagrams. I never knew there were so many forms of fog!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very cool and informative Weather Guide, December 9, 2000

It has been said "people complain about the weather but never do anything about it." Perhaps that's because they don't know much about it. This book will help you learn more about our weather. I was looking for a book that explained about various weather phenomenon and came across it. I loved it not only because of the pictures and descriptions in the last chapter on various weather types (different kinds of fogs, clouds, storms, precipitation, optical effects, etc), but also for lost of other information covered in the book, but also because the book's other chapters also contained so much excellent information. Subjects like Understanding the Weather (which covers the atmosphere, sources of weather, global wind patterns and different kinds of winds, frontal systems, etc.), Forecasting the Weather (obviously that has never been an exact science!), Changing the Weather, and also a secion on different climates and how humankind and animals adapt.

There are lots of pictures and diagrams in this book which help to explain key weather concepts. One day I will force myself to read this book cover to cover instead of getting sidetracked at all the gorgeous illustrations and pictures in this book, every time I pick it up to read it.
