Seriously....., April 25, 2007
This review is from: Weather Vane (Audio CD)
Intense, poetic, complex, intelligent and passionate are all good words to describe the eleven songs on this album. I imagine they'd also be good words to describe Nicky herself, who injects so much of herself into her songs that it's hard to separate the artist from the art. And art it is, without doubt. Nicky's lyrics are original and vibrant. And not a cliche to be heard. Her voice can be bold and strident, or like a whisper in your ear, and it carries emotion like a superconductor.
Weather Vane's themes encompass loss, transformation, hope - the learning that comes from living in the world and trying to make sense of it all. Though the melodies are beautiful, it's not easy listening. It's an album you need to sit down and pay attention to. If you're not in reflective mood when you start, you soon will be.
Notable tracks for me include Row Him Home, Fireflies, The Reckoning and the almost unbearably poignant Truly - one of the saddest, most beautiful songs I've ever heard. This is a great album by an artist who is only now beginning to gain recognition outside Canada (thanks to the Wailin' Jennys). And while I truly hope she continues with the Jennys for many more years, I hope that another solo album is on the agenda too.

Why so expensive?, August 10, 2010

I'm not sure why dealers are getting so much for this CD. If you go to Nicky's web site there are seveal links to buy it in the $20.00 range. I believe this os the only solo cd by this longtime member of The Wailin' Jennys.
