5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant work.
I have been a fan of Sylvian's work since the early 80's, when I first heard his "Briliant Trees". This is all his essential work, for listening to deeply, and not to be missed. The British pressings are decidedly superior to the US versions, having a warmer sound.

3.0 out of 5 stars Storm in a tea cup
Although containing obvious classic Sylvian tracks, the Weatherbox is not such a big surprise. The overinflated prices I've seen on the web are far, far from justified. There is little in the Box that adds anything significant to the instrumental sound landscapes found on, say, Gone to Earth. One might be better offer opting for the cheaper but nonetheless satisfying...

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius., November 22, 1998

I must also take exception with the rather thoughtless and inaccurate comments made by the main reviewer. DS has clearly made a bold and successful foray from his days with Japan in the late 70s. His solo albums (not to mention his artwork) have truly exemplified his musical maturity and genius. IMHO, Weatherbox is a beautiful compilation of some of DS's finest solo work as well some of the finest music in this genre. I think this set is a "must have" for all DS fans, and I am very excited it has been re-released at this time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential David Sylvian, December 16, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Weatherbox (Audio CD)
The breadth and depth of the music represented in this beautifully packaged collection has not lost anything w/ respect to its age/range of music. The accomponyment by the likes of Bill Nelson, Sakamoto, Jansen/Barbierri/Karn, Russell Mills, Robert Fripp, Michael Brooks et al bears testimony to just how many TALENTED ARTISTS are influenced and eager to work w/ Mr. Sylvian. Just Buy It.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, October 15, 1998

Correcting and taking exception with the main review, David Sylvian's first album is named Brilliant Trees, not Beautiful Trees and given the large collection of music represented, not to mention the complexity, one can only wonder if the main reviewer was paying enough attention to give a true and honest review,(if not a correct title to the artist's first solo release and the first album in the set) to this dynamic collection, or if he was trying to meet a quick deadline to get paid. My guess here is that he probably listened too quickly and missed a chance to give one of the best sets of music ever complied a fair review. This re-issued gem of musical prodigy is not a quick listen, it is complex and reveals beauty, progression, and a profound growth of talent and understanding of self. Weatherbox is a rare music find. Collaborations with musical prodigys such as Ryuichi Sakamoto, Holger Czukay and Robert Fripp have produced this very solid, amazingly intellectual collection of music. This very private, talented man has produced a brilliant body of work in this rare set that should not be missed.

David Sylvian has been one of my favorite artists for many years. I can honestly say that I appreciate his talent more each time I listen to one of his recordings. The music is timeless, beautiful, and touches the soul. I have a collection of over 2,000 cd's ... this collection is one of my favorites.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful music, beautiful package, December 13, 2009
By
This review is from: Weatherbox (Audio CD)
This collection contains all of Sylvian's key work through 1990. I agree with the Storm In A Teacup review that this may not be the most economical way to acquire Sylvian's early output, but the poetry of the packaging is what really sets this collection apart. Each jewel case in the set is silk-screened with symbols that overlay the booklet artwork. The box itself is printed with a beautiful aged parchment texture that recalls the work of 23 Envelope for 4AD. The door opens with a small silk ribbon pull and the thick booklet includes a full color poster. It's also fairly rare, not a whole lot were put into circulation and it's been out of print for years. Because of the artwork printed directly onto the jewel cases, one can only assume that the number of boxes in good repair will decrease over time as they crack or break from use.
One of the best examples of artful music packaging in the CD era.

This boxed set contains david Sylvian's first solo outings after having left Japan. While everything is not allways of the same excellent quality that he is sometimes capable of it is a superb collection. It was somewhat expensive at the time but the packaging was superb and is worth seeking out.

5.0 out of 5 stars This was the first CD (package) I ever bought., February 28, 1999
This review is from: Weatherbox (Audio CD)
Back in 1989 when this box set was originally released I did not yet have a CD player. I bought it immediately. This package was the first CD I ever owned. By now I have some 4000 CDs and these are still my favorites, especially "Secrets" that I listen to at least once a month. Do I need to say more?
