I recently received a review copy of "Weaving on Gourds". For people that are accomplished basket makers, the material in this book may not be new to you - but if you are the average gourd crafter with limited experience working with reed and other basketry materials, then this book is one you may want to add to your collection. The book begins with basic gourd crafting information for those that are new to gourds, and includes basic basketry techniques, pulling these skills together into projects in the later chapters. Information about weaving materials is included; most projects use reed and related fiber embellishments. One chapter shows how to weave dreamcatchers with waxed linen and optional added beading. (This book does NOT include information about pine needle weaving or closed coil weaving.)

The book shows several projects made by the author, but also includes a gallery section at the end of the book with photos from other contributing artists. Also included are a glossary of terms, a list of suppliers and biographies of the contributing artists. Each page is filled with photographs to illustrate techniques and to show finished examples. Professional photographers were used and the photos are clear, but the overuse of black backgrounds with heavy shadowing at the edges often overpowered the subjects instead of enhancing them.

The first person writing style makes you feel like you are in a class and the teacher is talking to you personally. (Schiffer Publishing does not do a lot of editing; the writing style varies from one author to another.) The instructions are clear and the included diagrams make the weaving steps easy to follow. In addition, helpful tips on topics such as gathering and dyeing, embellishments, and tools are included. If you are interested in the specific topics of weaving with reed on gourds or weaving dreamcatchers into gourds, then this book has all of the information you need to do a project from start to finish.

I have been working in gourds for several years and weaving on the rims with pineneedles so when I saw this book coming out I had to have it. The book is beautifully done with great photos that really help. The projects are beautiful too. My only criticism is that this book is not really meant for beginner basket weavers, like me. All the instuctions are there but some important things like, how long the spokes should be and what happens when a spoke breaks, or how long a weaver should you start with, appear to be missing or hidden somewhere in all the text. I am slowly getting through my first one but find I am stumbling around looking for an answer. But I am glad I bought this book and will work it all out

This new book by Marianne Barnes on weaving on gourds has spectacular pictures from her own gourds she has woven on as well as some very well known gourd artists. It does have some instruction for starting to weave on a gourd, and instructions for cleaning and preparing your gourd.

However, I had hoped to see more instruction in this book. For a novice it would be hard to produce the kind of gourd weavings that are shown here. But for an experienced weaving basket maker, it would definitely give them plenty to look forward to in trying their hand at doing this beautiful artwork.

Nice book for your collection.

My first experience with weaving on gourds was in a class taught by the author. That one class was what started my experience in the gourd world. This book has shown me additional techiques that I'll use in future projects. A great book by a great teacher and author. Can't wait for her next book!

I cannot wait to show this to my creative neighbor who loves to do this type of stuff. Based upon the
reviews, it is clearly defined and fun for those creative folks. I don't make a thing, but I love those who do!
My friend Laura will love this, love it!
