A priority motive for me in creating a poem is communication. Whenever I might try to be more suggestive and indirect as might be the current fashion, instead of semantically clear and direct, I seem to get the poem into trouble. I am forced to revise intensively and make it more clear again. Instead of surrealism, odd juxtapositions, etc., I stick mostly to "plain speech," opting instead to capture an unusual experience, probing for its fresh meaning. And rhythm: I intend that the rhythm of English and the line divisions I make join and enhance the meaning or rhetorical level. I think readers will find the poems accessible, engaging, and universal. "Simple" and clear, they took a lot of work.
