I met the author at a book fair in Harlem and was charmed by her enthusiasm. I read Web of Deception and am so disappointed. The writing was so bad it made me laugh out loud. The main character is suppose to be so smart and sophisticated that, at age 26, she is a top journalist in the #1 market, but is so naive and immature that she lives with relatives because she doesn't have the willpower to save enough money to get an apartment. The plot is incredulous - not even remotely feasible. The characters trite. Overall, a big mistake.

Ms. Brookshire tells a good story, but her editors failed to support her with a rigorously and properly edited manuscript. The errors are so numerous, egregious, and breathtaking, that one wonders how this book ever got published. For example:Acknowledgements: "..you've served Tony and I well" "My very first readers who lended comments and criticisms"p. 45: "It was nice..especially the singing, she said, complementing heruncle".p.82: "Taxi's had become her transportation of choice". p.155: "Let's go away, just you and I."p.167: "It's some expose' series.."p.228: "...echoed off of the mountains.:p. 169:"RICO stands for RacketeeringInfluence Corrupt Organizations."p.246: "The Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations..."p.260: "It calculated her feelingsprecisely:"About the Author: (Inside back cover)"LaJoyce Brookshire is also the author of the best-selling novel based on the smash hit motion picture SOUL FOOD." Which came first, the novel or the movie?Finally, Ms Brookshire doesn't seem to have a clue about how either airport metal detectors work or how implausible it is to perform surgery with tweezers.Nevertheless, it was a good read and I look forward to more from her and especially her editors.

I was captivated from the first page. The details of NY and Chicago made me feel as though I was there. This whodunnit was peppered with a delicious love story which was well told and entertaining. Check it out for yourself. You won't be able to put the book down.
