3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.
This book was very informative, but not what I expected. It isn't for the regular person wanting to learn how to design their own website, it is for professionals wanting to get into the business of designing web sites.

This review is from: Web Design for Dummies (Paperback)
Web Design for Dummies packs an impressive amount of information in an easy-to-use format. The ample screen shots show you what to do, while the many tip/warning icons provide time-saving ideas.

But what I like best about it is that overall it helps break down the *process* of designing web sites. That way, you can see how the pros construct great sites, using a realistic workflow. It helps you focus on designing sites one piece at a time, which is quite empowering.

Whether you are simply browsing for ideas or you are working through a chapter in depth, this book will not disappoint!

4.0 out of 5 stars Too Many for Me, January 22, 2006
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Web Design for Dummies (Paperback)
Most of the Dummies books I know of are pitched to the ordinary joe. I bought this book assuming that it would be too, so it would help me design my own web page. Not so. This is for people who want to make a career out of designing web pages. It assumes that you will be part of a team that includes marketing people, designers (in addition to you), media specialists, "HTML slingers," programmers, and a producer to pull the team together and bring the project in on time and on budget.

Well, okay. If you are the person it's written for, I suspect that you would give it five stars, like the other reviewers. Even with the disconnect, I got so much out of parts of it that I'll give it four. I will bet, however, that if your ambitions are as modest as mine are, there are other, better books.

Web Design for Dummies covers an amazing array of stuff from planning and client management through to creative strategies, production, and even how to manage your own consulting business.

What I found most insightful was the way Lisa covers the entire web design workflow- showing you the entire creative process, even user testing.

This book is a must read for any designer! Thanks Lisa

5.0 out of 5 stars A Practical Web Design Guide, November 8, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Web Design for Dummies (Paperback)
I personally enjoyed reading this book because it's clear and easy to follow. The information in it is very practical. For example, it gives specific steps to take if one is interested in becoming a freelance web-designer. It also mentions a 5-step process with regards to dealing with clients. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in web design. This goes for those who are thinking about starting their own web design business as well as for those who are planning to work for a company. The author has a very good sense of humor which makes the book even more interesting and fun to read. I liked it so much that I couldn't put it down.

5.0 out of 5 stars a must read for any designer!, March 5, 2005
By
Irene (West Bloomfield, MI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Web Design for Dummies (Paperback)
I feel that this text is a must buy for any web designer! Web Design for Dummies is written in such a way that it's so easy to follow. Beginners surely wouldn't be confused or lost with it. Everything is practically spoon fed to you which some may think is a bad idea, but I believe that that's the way to learn! With step by step instructions, help tips and warning tips in the margins, and countless screen caps showing you EXACTLY what you should be doing is an awesome guide to becoming a designer. I love how this text is also written from a business aspect for those of you wanting to be an actual designer. Not only does it give you steps and tips of how to become a freelance web-designer but it also touches on the subject of dealing with clients which is also very important. Not only does it teach you how to make a high-quality web-page but also educates you on how to keep your clients coming back for more! Another thing I liked about this package is the bonus CD rom which contained trials of Dreamweaver, Flash and Photoshop which will only add onto the creativity and flair of your webpage. This guide walks you through on a step-by-step walkthrough through the entire web design process - from the drawing board to the published final piece.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great book to get the creative juices flowing...., April 30, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Web Design for Dummies (Paperback)
I'm not an expert on making web pages, but I do concider myself creative. This book helped to get the two working together without too much work and less headaches than if I tried to do it alone.

There's plenty of information to help you decide the look and feel of your site. Whether it's a kids site, club site or a small business site. There are sound suggestions and notes on what to watch out for and a list of things NOT to do if you want great pages.

My son was 10 when he wanted to put up his own site. He's 14 now with at least a dozen sites and this book is on his reference shelf. I can't even get it back from him! Along with the QR HTML 4.1 for Dummies - he's doing amazing sites!

I think that if you need some help with how to make attractive and well designed pages that make visitors come back again and again...this book will help you out - hands down!

5.0 out of 5 stars Making the Music, May 18, 2006
By
Wild Rose (in front of the computer) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Web Design for Dummies (Paperback)
Knowing all the notes doesn't make music, and knowing all the code doesn't make a web page.

This is a great book to get you going on serious web design.

In the beginning of the book Lisa Lopuck states:
"I'm not talking about building personal sites with frilly fonts and loud background patterns. I'm talking about building enterprise-level Web sites for real-world clients"

You will find step-by-step instructions for:
*Building Wire-frames
*Setting up Testing
*Dealing with Clients
*Putting together a Proposal
And just about anything else you might need for setting up a Web Design Business.

But what if you just want to put together a few sites to "Make Some Money on the Web"?

Well, this book might be for you too. For instance; customers will get frustrated and go away if the navagation doesn't work - and here you will find out how to get a few friends together to test your navagation.

There is a lot of information about the planning stages of a site. And there are a lot of good reasons why it is NOT a good idea to start with "One Page" and then watch Toppsie grow. So she shows you how to do it. Step-by-step.

Also note: This seems to be a new format for Dummies books. The pages are glossy and the images are very good.

Highly recomended for anyone who wants to build more than one or two sites.

4.0 out of 5 stars Web Design for Dummies Review, June 26, 2006
This book is a great overview of the Website Design business. There are so many different functions of the website design process, more than I imagined. This book will not tell you step by step how to design a website. It more gives you a direction on what you may want to choose to learn first. If you want to build a website start with learning about HTML,Adobe Photoshop, Java or Flash books. Still a great read for someone who is just starting. Good tips in the book on sizing and color regarding consistancy on how different browsers will show the website.

1.0 out of 5 stars Web Design for Dummies a waste of time, February 24, 2006
This review is from: Web Design for Dummies (Paperback)
I ordered this book along with HTML for Dummies expecting to get started writing simple web pages.

I was very disappointed with this book...It spent too much time promoting tools and services outside of the "Dummy" concept. It spent too much time offering you a class on how to become a Customer Requirements Gatherer instead of teaching you how to design a web page.
