Book Description

When it comes to creating Web pages, no single tool is sufficient. Web creators need to master a wide variety of authoring and graphics tools, as well as have a basic working knowledge of HTML. Web Graphics Tools and Techniques, 2nd Edition is your ultimate guide, written by a professional Web designer. Significantly updated since its original 1997 release, this edition adds new Web design techniques and developments, including Macromedia Flash and Adobe InDesign, GoLive, and LiveMotion. The book begins with basic Web concepts, then proceeds into the specifics of formatting graphics, text, and tables with HTML. From there, it moves deeper into graphics techniques, explaining the use of such graphics tools as Photoshop, Painter, Poser, and Director. In addition, it covers additional issues such as tables, frames, clickable image maps, 3-D images, QuickTime VR, Java, and user interaction. This complete four-color book is lavishly illustrated with large pictures, while sidebars offer hints and tips.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

In Web Graphics Tools and Techniques, Kentie gives designers and would-be Webmasters a useful peek into every aspect of Web graphics. He discusses the current and evolving HTML standard and delves into using HTML for tables and precise placement of graphics and image maps. He also explains JPEG and GIF graphics, animation, sound, and video, taking into account cross-platform and bandwidth issues and targeting both Windows and Macintosh users. His discussion of graphics and color palettes is useful, particularly where he discusses when and why you'd pick GIF over JPEG, and vice versa. Kentie also writes about several of the software packages available to accomplish the tasks at hand; his favorites are Fractal Design Painter and Adobe Photoshop. He assumes that you're fairly familiar with the tools and that you're ready to extend your knowledge to designing good-looking Web graphics. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Library Journal

Good web design books cover three things: pure HTML syntax, tips to attract surfers, and design issues. Striking a balance among the three is very difficult; however, renowned Dutch designer Kentie has achieved it here. Best suited for new and intermediate designers, his guide shows how to create a storyboard, use site statistics for marketing purposes, and apply edgy design techniques without scaring off visitors, among other things. Advanced designers, too, will find plenty of food for thought. On par with Robin Williams and John Tollett's excellent The Non-Designer's Web Book (Computer Media, LJ 12/00), this work makes superb use of text and visuals; highly recommend for all libraries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Value for money and a great deal of help !, February 3, 1998
By A Customer
Unlike other web design books that mainly seem to focus on how to spell HTML-tags, this book really discusses what web design is about. How can I use HTML-functions and graphics to spice up my site and get attention from the site's visitors ? What are the choices I have, and what do I have to consider when making these choices ? How to deal with different browser types ? All these topics and many more are extensively covered. The book is not only a good start-up for newbies, but also a guide for advanced web designers. Subjects are well organized and easy to find. I've seen many web design books so far, but none got even close to this one. And of course the glossy (but functional) appearance of the book adds to the fun of using it.

And to my humble opinion he managed to teach you on an easy manner to make better webpages.
