Book Description

0471242160 978-0471242161 July 13, 1998
In this complete how-to guide, expert Sue Ki Wilcox takes a hands-on approach to teaching you how to use and get the most out of the avatar tools currently on the market. For each tool covered, she walks you through all the steps involved in using that tool to create a CyberAndroid. She also uses numerous examples taken from sites around the world to give you an idea of the various ingenious ways avatars are being used in business and entertainment, and to acquaint you with the crucial issues surrounding the creation and use of avatars. With Web Developer.com Guide to 3D Avatars, you'll quickly master:
* Body geometry and texture mapping for avatars
* Techniques for making photographic replicas of faces and bodies for avatars
* Motion-capture and other advanced techniques to give your avatar cool moves
* Techniques for creating avatars that think for themselves
* Browser compatibility, file formats, multiuser servers, and interfaces.

From a talking head to a fantasy heroine, or even a photorealistic representation of yourself, equipped with naturalistic body movements and emotional responses, the options for how you represent yourself or your organization on the Internet are limited only by your imagination.

The CD-ROM gives you:
* Avatar models that you can customize for your own use
* Demos of various avatar creation software packages
* Complete copy of 3D Planet's(r) 3D Assistant(TM)
* A variety of 3D viewers for entering multiuser worlds
* Authoring tools for creating your own 3D world
* Tutorials from professionals in the field of avatar design.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

This book can help you understand how to plan and build avatars. The author assumes that you're Web savvy but relatively unfamiliar with 3-D graphics. She first explains the concepts of avatars and avatar standards and provides an overview of working with 3-D graphics, rendering, and texture mapping. She thoroughly introduces you to several of the various avatar-construction sets (Avatar Maker, People Space, Avatar Builder, Dancer, Cosmo Worlds, Poser, 3D Assistant, Oz Avatar Editor, Le Deuxieme Monde, Figure Sculptor, and Onlive) and explains virtual reality modeling/markup language (VRML) avatars. The second part guides you through working with prebuilt bodies such as ergonomic avatars, virtual humans, and 3-D clip-art avatars. Part 3 shows you how to polish your work by using voxel technology (a 3-D version of a pixel) and by using 3-D scanners. Part 4 teaches you how to animate your avatar and give it a personality (using tools such as CyberMask and LifeForms). Part 5 reviews the three main standard bodies and takes a look at the future of avatars. A glossary defines computer graphics and Web terms and a CD-ROM lists avatar-related software, Web sites, and books, as well as demo versions of several 3-D-modeling tools and freeware versions of several 3-D viewers. --Kathleen Caster

From Library Journal

Wilcox reveals a future where you can actually do something useful with virtual reality 3D on the netAyou can't at the moment because of copper wiring and slow bandwidth, but this will change. At the heart of her vision are avatars, the virtual representatives of our login names. Wilcox mixes her discussion of how to create virtual worlds and 3D avatars with ample examples. This is an advanced beginner's guide to 3D and virtual reality, and it is not easy reading.

Ms. Wilcox offers a wealth of information - lots in the book and even more on the CD. After reading the respective chapters, one gets a fairly accurate idea of what a specific program or developing environment can do an what it can't. Next one can move to the demo versions provided on CD - of course, the book cannot fully document any of the programs it introduces, but as an overview of the field, it is quite comprehensive and packed with information. If you're new to the field, buy it and read it fast, before it becomes outdated.
