Your in-depth guide to understanding the WSE for .NET enterprise applications

Web Services Enhancements for Microsoft .NET gives you a powerful new tool for building today’s complex enterprise Web services. Here is the owner’s manual that makes it all make sense, written by a Microsoft expert who has worked directly with the WSE development team. This in-depth book examines the XML Web services model and the Global XML Web Services Architecture (GXA), provides in-depth instruction on WS-Security, shows you how to build your own SOAP router, explores sending attachments with your SOAP messages using the new DIME specification, and shows you all the tips and tricks to make the WSE work for you.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Install the WSE and apply its advantages to XML Web services on the .NET platform
  • Build more complex services that provide message integrity and security
  • Incorporate GXA standards into your enterprise applications
  • Understand and use WS-Security, WS-Routing, WS-Timestamp, and WS-Attachments
  • Connect your systems with partners, customers, and suppliers
  • Use WSE infrastructure protocols to solve security and scalability problems
  • Add security credentials to a SOAP message, then digitally sign and encrypt it
  • Route SOAP messages using WS-Routing and WS-Referral
  • Comprehend the DIME specification and its effect on attachments

The companion Web site provides author files, links to useful .NET sites, and more.

This book introduces the toolset from Microsoft to use to build web services on .NET- the WSE,which is now being offered for free at the MSDN web site. I've read some other books by this author and found them helpful. This book did not let me down. It is valuable to any developer looking to build robust and well-architected web services.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great book - Just past its prime., October 19, 2005
By
This review is from: Web Services Enhancements: Understanding the WSE for .NET Enterprise Applications (Paperback)
I hope Mr. Evjen will put out an updated version of this book when WSE 3.0 hits the scene. Being new to web services I grabbed a used copy to get into WSE. I found this to be a well written book with great examples in both C# and VB (about time!). However, those great examples are using WSE 1 so you will find code that is obsolete. An updated edition with the same plain language explanations and examples would be 5 stars, so keep your eyes open.
