5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction To PHP and Scripting
This is a very good introduction to scripting using PHP.
The books has lots of diagrams and examples. I have worked through several examples and still refer to the diagrams
to quickly look up things I forgotten. The code examples are
short and have detailed code walk throughs that really help understand them.

3.0 out of 5 stars Written for PHP 4 (not the current version of PHP at the time of this review)
I can not comment on the quality of the instruction in this book because I stopped reading it once I discovered it is written for PHP 4.0 (mentioned on page 5, last paragraph). I gave it three stars to give it the benefit of the doubt.

There are probably valid parts of this book, but if you're interested in learning PHP 5 (the current version of PHP at the...

4.0 out of 5 stars Read the book, dump their site, then move onto www.php.net, February 19, 2004

I teach an introductory web sequence that includes some PHP. I use this book because it has good explanations instead of doing lite coverage of everything that's done on the web.

The book's website is hosed, however. Ignore it as they have ignored my pleas for fixing it. By Fall I'll probably have a version that does what the book says it does.

Thin is OK if the book is good. This book is both.

As you work through the book, get acquainted with the manual at www.php.net - it'll take you the next step.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good intro to PHP, October 2, 2002

As a PHP instructor, I found this book to be an excellent introduction to programming on the web with PHP. It doesn't require that you have any programming background before diving into the book. My students did well with this book but it just wasn't enough material for a semseter.

Although it is a little shorter than I would have liked, it's a great book to get you started with PHP. This book is a good companion to Core PHP.

3.0 out of 5 stars Written for PHP 4 (not the current version of PHP at the time of this review), June 7, 2009

I can not comment on the quality of the instruction in this book because I stopped reading it once I discovered it is written for PHP 4.0 (mentioned on page 5, last paragraph). I gave it three stars to give it the benefit of the doubt.

There are probably valid parts of this book, but if you're interested in learning PHP 5 (the current version of PHP at the time of this review), you might consider Larry Ullman's PHP for the World Wide Web , third edition (Visual QuickStart Guide). I have not completed the book yet, but so far it is very thorough (Larry Ullman's book, that is) with clear explanation and useful appendices for installing XAMPP(Windows) or MAMP(Mac), which have the components you will need to develop locally with PHP on your computer. It will provide the reader with a strong foundation in PHP.

Please note that PHP for the World Wide Web, third edition (Visual QuickStart Guide) does not discuss theoretical concepts of object oriented programming (as stated by its author). He treats this subject in another one of his books. But a good start, however, with an introduction to databases and structured query language in Chapter 12.

The book came in brand new condition. Amazon took a while to actually send the book even though they said it was available for shipping, but once they sent it, it arrived quickly.

Book arrived in pristine condition.
Shipping took awfully long.
Let customers know you are shipping out of the United States.
However customer service is quite good.
