Editorial Reviews

Review
Far and away the best book written about Java, J2EE or WebSphere. A compact read, a fun read, and and easy read. The author has a great way using his way with words to enable to reader to easily conceptualize difficult subject. A great book! It makes WebSphere easy and clear. --Jim Chaung

I spent over $3000 on a WebSphere class, and left totally confused. Discouraged, I was given a copy of this book, and everything came clear. I really wish I read this book instead of taking the class. It's amazing how clear and concise material, that is delivered in a manner that is entertaining and easy to read, can make what are otherwise complex topics, clear and simple. --Katie Heffernan

In an industry where books are typically dry and out of date, this book is entertaining and effective. This is a total, required read for anyone working with, or planning to work with WebSphere. --Michael Carerra

Product Description
What is WebSphere? is the reference you need to start understanding, managing, and capitalizing on an IBM based, WebSphere infrastructure.

As a developer, mentor and technical trainer, the author, Cameron McKenzie, has been preaching the virtues of WebSphere for years. However, in his sermons, the same questions keep coming up, over and over again.

What is WebSphere? tackles those questions in a funny, informative and easy to understand manner. This book is the best tool around for demystifying IBM's middle-tier technology.

What is WebSphere? tackles those 'need to know' questions to which both WebSphere soldiers and J2EE neophytes need to have the answers.

If you want to learn about WebSphere in a hurry, but you don't want to read a 700 page textbook that is littered with unreadable code, this is the book for you. In fact, the author promises right off the bat to demystify WebSphere without throwing all sorts of HTML and Java code in your face. Of course, the author breaks that promise on about half a dozen pages, but the sentiment remains.

Whether you're a DBA, a senior systems analyst, a project manager, or a Java developer, there is knowledge in this book that you absolutely need to have..... The sections on demystifying J2EE and the WebSphere runtime environment will empower project managers to make more effective management decisions.

The section on connection pooling and JDBC management will enlighten DBAs.

The advanced sections on WebSphere classloaders, Java Naming (JNDI) and session management will enable developers to better leverage the services afforded to them by the WebSphere Application Server.

And the sections on the WebSphere runtime will help J2EE architects make more enlightened infrastructure decisions.

It doesn't matter who you are - if you are using WebSphere, you need the knowledge contained in this book! Order your copy now!

5.0 out of 5 stars classloading and session management chapters especially good, December 19, 2004
TYhis was probably the most humorous and entertaining technical book I've ever read. It's nice to have a book thats both interesting and informative, especially when its on a topic as intimidating as websphere.

I've been working with websphere for 3 years, but this book really helped round out my knowledge of the subject. The chapters on classloaders and session management were especially good. I'm going to have all of my developers read them.

Five Stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Overpriced, February 17, 2007
By Srikanth Nittala (Minneapolis USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I think the book is easily overpriced by at least $30. The contents in the book serve as just introduction to all the J2EE topics and they sound like a brief canteen chat we have with our fellow programmers. After reading the book you can simply 'talk' about the all the ingredients in J2EE and learn nothing practical.
So if you are programmer and want some in depth knowledge in Websphere usage and it's practical applications, this is not for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Masterpiece, December 19, 2004
I was required to learn about Websphere as part of my project management job. After struggling with confusing textbooks and expensive software, I stumbled upon this gem. Cameron has created a learning tool that is both informative and funny. Not only do I have a much better understanding of Websphere, I feel like I have the upper hand over many of the senior analysts. Thank You Cameron!
