5.0 out of 5 stars Great! September 1, 2012
By Jane N.
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I loved the characters in this book. I felt like I knew and liked them right away. I read it out loud to my daughter and we were intrigued from the first sentence. I like the way the author combined the present day with a more nostalgic, sweet, and innocent time of long ago (I could tell because I'm a native of Saginaw and recognized the long-gone Bertie's Bakery and Webber House). The result is a story for today's kids that shows them a life they can choose to have if they put away the video games!

I also like the integration of spirituality into the book. It's a part of the girls' lives and never seems contrived or off-putting. The life the author presents is inviting in every way, from the beautiful relationships that include friendship, romance and an abiding sense of community to the loving but real families. I highly recommend this book, especially as a read aloud with your daughter or granddaughter!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book August 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I loved this book. I live in Saginaw, MI so I was eager to read a book about my home town. Not only does it discribe the town accurately, it captures the lives of some pretty wonderful people. I realize that the book is written for tweens and teens, but even a grandma like me can enjoy this delightful book. Besides being a good book,it has questions for discussion at the end. This would be a great book to have a group of kids read and then have a discussion about it. A great learning tool. Another special thing about the book is the ability to connect to a blog at the end of the book. The blog has many interesting links, pictures, and ideas that enhance the reading experience. Great Work Ms. Clifford. I can hardly wait to see what the next one will be like. Keep up the good work!

5.0 out of 5 stars Going home December 5, 2012

It was great to revisit the neighborhoods that I grew up in. Having gone to Sacred Heart and St. Joseph's I was excited to be reminded of how wonderful it was growing up in Saginaw. I was disappointed that the "Webber House" was so short but will be picking up the rest of the series. I am living in Midland now so this has inspired me to go back and see my old homes on 4th St. and Gallagher.

Keeping secrets may not always be the best idea. Sometimes it can cause problems that you would never expect it to.

Thanks Mary Ellen, not only for an entertaining book, but a great walk down memory lane for me. Though it seems
To be more Youth Fiction, it can be enjoyed by any age, with me at 57 being proof. Bought all 4 in the series and
Will start "Bertie's" in a few minutes. I grew up on Saginaw's Eastside and am familiar with so many of your locations!

5.0 out of 5 stars Adventure, Mystery and Charm January 2, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read this book because the author offered a free download and I was not disappointed. Even though it is for children, it is an easy, fun read for all ages. It is well-paced, interesting and full of charming details that draw the reader more and more into the story and the characters.

I also enjoyed that the book had the substance of faith underpinning a story of adventure and mystery.

This book is an enjoyable read with substance, adventure and fun. I recommend it for all ages and I hope to read the rest of the books in the series!
