5.0 out of 5 stars Weber One Touch Platinum...Charcoal Grill Solidly Built

The weber grill was packaged very poorly. The lid is damaged with a chip causing the metal to be exposed, thereby leaving it subject to rust. Looking at the barbecue, the right side roller was broken off at the end. Is there any way to order a new lid & new roller?

5.0 out of 5 stars Weber One Touch Platinum...Charcoal Grill Solidly Built, January 2, 2010
I received this grill as a Christmas present and was more than pleasantly surprised. I've always been a fan of the Weber. I recyled my original 18.5" Weber after 20 years. Assembly took about an hour. The instructions have no words, just follow the pictures. The package comes with a small plastic thumb wrench to install the nuts for the handle and fasten the kettle to the frame. All you need to supply is a phillips #2 screwdriver and a rubber mallet.

1.) The price point places this grill between the Gold 22.5 Series and the Performer series.
2.) No more flimsy tripod legs that have a tendency to come out of the kettle base when you move the grill. There are two nuts that fasten the kettle to the side supports on the main frame.
3.) The frame is made of bent steel tubing. The lower half of the frame is connected to the upper half via two black metal clamping connectors secured with two screws each. When assembling the lower and upper halves of the frame, there is a slight offset in the connector assembly clearly shown by a hand lifting the partial assembly in the instructions. If you have to put effort into screwing the parts together...you are assembling it incorrectly. I can see where this will cause some people problems when they claim that their parts arrived to them incorrectly tapped or stripped. My advice: take parts A and B of the clamping metal connector and just start the screws so you can gage the amount of effort it takes to close the clamps. There are also two adjustable feet opposite the wheels that will allow you to level the frame to take out any wobble on uneven surfaces.
4.) Side Tables: Hard thermoset weather resistant, heat resistant plastic. There are two metal standoff clips that are to be installed with self tapping screws on each table. These clips will prevent a hot lid from touching the tables. Pay attention to the instructions and the orientation of the pictures.
5.) The lid has a built in thermometer 150 - 600 deg F. The handle for the lid is attached at the lip of the lid with two nuts. Lift up on the handle and the lid rolls back on two plastic rollers factory attached to the bottom kettle. The lid will eventually rotate back to rest on the two metal standoff clips mentioned above. You never have to completely remove the lid, it just rotates/rolls back and leaves plenty of room to access the entire grill.
6.) Wheels: Hard weather resistant, heat resistant plastic. You'll need the rubber mallet to install the retaining nuts for the wheels...just line them up and give it a good whack.
7.) The bottom rack is a nice feature, it stays solidly supported within the frame.
8.) Ash catching assembly. You have to snap the assembly collar to get the tabs to hook into the leg stubs in the kettle. Don't bend it too much, just deform it gently and work it in.
9.) The ash sweeping vane assembly was factory installed.
10.) Unit comes with two char-baskets, charcoal grill support, and hinged cooking grate.

I don't know why this product is not on Weber(-Stephen) website yet as of 1/2/10. This certainly is a noticeable upgrade from the Weber Gold series and it is definitely a winner in their product line. Solid construction. Solid company. I've always been a fan, but now I have another reason to love my Weber.

Finally the weber kettle I have always wanted. I own a one touch gold, but have always wished for a little more with it, and now I finally have everything, and then some. Sure, you are paying quite a bit more, but the added benefits that come with this kettle are worth it.

1. The cart. I have always had an issue with the three flimsy legs that came with the original kettle. Not only did I find that they weren't high enough, but if you wanted to lift it somewhere the legs would fall off. Well not anymore. Everything is bolted together which not only provides a safer way to cook, but it also makes the entire thing very sturdy. They have also managed to raise the whole thing, bringing it closer to the user making it easier to cook with.

2. Thermoset work surfface. One thing I have always struggled with was where do I put things when I am cooking. I used a little folding table with my one touch gold, but this makes things a lot easier, and with less items to store. Now, I can hang my utensils from the moulded hooks, and place dishes on the work surface.

3. Finally a place to put the lid! Sure there was a hook inside the lid of the one touch gold, but with this you just lift, and slide back. Not only does the Tuck Away holder hold the lid, but it also doubles as a wind breaker when you are lighting your charcoal.

4. A built in Thermometer. Yes, you could always drill a hole and install one yourself, but with this you know you are keeping your original porcelain finish intact.

5. And last but not least, it is nice that they chose to include the charcoal holders with the barbecue. Sure you can buy them for a measly 14.00, but really shouldn't they come with it?

I truly can't say enough about this kettle, I love it. It is very well built, and finally has all the extras I have been wanting. Now only if they had included the rotisserie attachment. Uh, beggers can't be choosers. I will break down and buy that too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very versatile Weber Kettle Grill!, May 17, 2010
I absolutely love the stability of the footing design on the Weber Platinum. Originally I was gonna buy a One Touch Gold, but the extra height, extra workspace and stability of this one made it a winner. Originally we were just going to use this on weekends.... We use it all the time now instead of our gas grill. The charcoal experience and smell always brings up fond "memories past" of charcoal grilling. The smell brings everyone back to a good place. When our guests/relatives taste the food, they are really blown away. Without a doubt, get the charcoal chimney. It provides a quicker and cleaner start than user lighter fluid. Your Kettles are excellent Weber. We are converted......

The two side tables, temperature gauge, charcoal wells (2) and the ash-catching pot at the bottom are features the less expensive Weber grills lack. Assembly was easy and I put mine together in under an hour. Pieces are well made and solid. Instructions are reasonably fool-proof. Tables have tool hangers. Lowe's has the Chimney Starter for a lower price and it is better than using starter fluid. No chemicals and the coals start up on two sheets of newspaper. Go to SAM's and get their steam table foil trays for indirect grilling; they are cheaper than the Weber versions. The box and grill weigh 73 lbs so plan accordingly. Hinged grilling surface provides easy access to add charcoal without having to pull everything off. I haven't found it cheaper and have not regretted the expense. The food is marvelous!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Grill, March 16, 2010

I absolutely love this grill. After years of using charcoal, I bought a small gas grill but realized that I couldn't get the same flavor as I could with a charcoal grill. I wanted to go back to a Weber but didn't like the 3-legged ones. This just fits the bill. I love the side tables and the sturdiness of having 4 legs. My only disappointment is that I was hoping that the red would be fire-engine red. I would describe it more as redwood colored.

The Amazon Marketplace really came through this time. 200% was not good enough, now they're hitting 300%. In about a week we received the Platinum Grill (including all its fantastic features), the Weber cover (fits like a glove and great eye appeal), the Weber chimney starter, the veggie basket, the chicken cooker (uh, the "poultry infusion roaster", sorry about that), and the 6-skewer kabob will be here w/i two days. All products and service have been so EXCELLENT, I wouldn't be surprised if Weber/Amazon team showed up tonight with steaks and veggies for dinner! Not only are each of the products exactly as advertised, they were shipped here from all parts of the country by variety of sellers and ALL arrived on time and in perfect condition (kabobber still to come). We had first Platinum meal last night and it was fantastic. Grill is built like a tank but agile enough for 5'2" 100lb female to handle with little effort. Height of Platinum was exactly what I wanted for my 6'2" (zero strain on back). The Chimney starter worked exactly as the favorable reviews say it does (hot coals ready to cook in 10-15 minutes). Side shelves were worth every penny of added cost (and we still have about 20 years of use). Utensil hanging knobs are very nice touch and perfectly designed.

Service, ahh SERVICE...we had opportunity to earn PhD in macro/micro ash catcher assembly and philosophy. The two customer service reps at Weber insisted on 100% solution and satisfaction before they would consider hanging up. Out of the entire assembly process, we encountered a little doubt in one part of the ash catcher install. They worked us through it very, very patiently and accurately. Their level of service is priceless. Anyone considering Platinum ahould know grill and related Weber products will be unbelievably above expectations; you won't regret!

I bought this grill because of the small foot print, the ash catcher and the side tables. The grill is very well built. I have cooked a weber kettle grill for 8 years now and love them.
So far, I am extremely pleased, However, I must say it is over priced @ $249.

With a couple of small exceptions, assembling the grill is a snap. Wordless pictures show every step.

The ash assembly was the only head scratcher. Because Weber uses the same bowl for this grill that they use for the tripod-leg model, it takes a bit of staring at the drawings in order to understand what the pictures are saying. Once you get it, though, it's very clever.

Had an old 22.5" Weber for 15 years, and it's time to give it the heave-ho. The new lid feels a bit light to me, but I hefted the old 22.5" lid, and it feels about the same. Looking forward to many more years of Weber charcoal grilling.
___________

Use natural lump charcoal. Even mainline grocery stores carry it. It burns fast and hot, and has no petroleum in it like all briquettes do.

This grill is a nice size. Love the way the lid slides open. Directions for putting it together were pretty clear but putting the ash catcher on was a bit frustrating. We eventually got it but can see that this is going to be an issue each time we empty it. Good thing the catcher is big. Love the 2 tables on either end for putting stuff on and the hooks on the ends for hanging utensils. Overall very pleased.
