I used the Cherry Chunks on a ECB for a boston butt yesterday. The wood smelled great as soon as I opened the package. The only reason I give this 4 stars instead of 5 was because this is not actually a 5 pound bag. Its 3.75 pounds. Once I noticed that, I felt I had overpaid. While this wood is nice, I'm not convinced I need to shell out more for this than 10 pounds of charcoal.

Very disappointed in this product. I had ordered 2 bags and both of them were more like chips. It was a good thing that I had ordered 2 bags because of the size I had to use much more to get that good thick smoke going. I expected much more from something that Weber puts their name on. I have been looking around and seen that others have had similar issues. It was very good, clean wood, don't get me wrong, but if you think that you are getting chunks don't plan on it. You may get 3 good 3 inch chunks.

I was very excited to get this, since it was to complement my WSM. I love pecan wood, but the wood I received is not of great quality. There are maybe 2-3 large chunks and the rest are chips. Also, the large chunks have bark on them, so that will have to be taken off before they go into my WSM. Also, the bag weighs 4 lbs 7 oz, NOT 5 lbs! I purchased some apple wood from Home Depot made by Charbroil. The price is around $6-7 and actually weighs 5 lbs. There are more chunks that are larger, though they still have bark on them. But they are cheaper and you get more. I strongly, strongly recommend to get your wood elsewhere and try to avoid Weber's wood. I can't believe this Weber product. I usually have great experience with Weber and love their products. Come to think of it, I have never had a problem with a Weber product until now. Again, I strongly recommend going elsewhere for your wood needs! Stay away from this Weber product!

Having recently received a smoker for Christmas, I knew I would have to get some wood to smoke with. After doing research, I learned that wood chunks are MUCH better than wood chips because chips require soaking and burn up quickly. Wood chunks do not require soaking and smoke a good amount. Also with that research, I learned of which type of wood provides specific flavoring. I made my selections based on the following description from a well known BBQ site:

Apple: Slightly sweet but denser, fruity smoke flavor. The strongest flavor of all the fruitwoods. Beef, poultry, game birds, pork (particularly ham)

Pecan: Sweet and mild with a flavor similar to hickory but not as strong. Tasty with a subtle character an all-around superior smoking wood. Good for most things including poultry, beef, pork and cheese. Pecan is the best for that beautiful golden-brown turkey.

With that said, I decided on apple wood and pecan wood. After shopping around locally (and comparing to Amazon while shopping), I found that the wood chunks were cheaper than my local stores.

Unlike other reviewers, both bags of wood (apple and pecan 5-pounders) that I received were nice sized chunks and nowhere near the size of "chips" like they stated. Of course those reviews were back in 2010 and 2011. So maybe Weber improved the quality of their content over time.

Highly recommended.

I've used approximately 4 bags of both Apple and Hickory wood chunks from Weber. Every bag has had an acceptable amount of actual chunks with very little smaller "chip" sized wood. For the price this is an excellent product.

Good wood. Nice medium size chunks for my offset smoker. Pricey though. I've since found the same product at my local hardware store for less. Found another brand at my grocery store for five bucks for ten pounds of large hickory chunks. Even found some peach tree wood from a local orchard. If you absolutely have no access to smoking wood in your area, buy these. Otherwise if you keep your eyes open you'll probably find better buys elsewhere.

I used the pecan wood with different meats in conjunction with other fruit woods and was never disappointed in the flavor. Just opening the bag the pecan wood had a distinct smell that I loved.

Perhaps Weber got the message re: advertised weight of this product [5#] and actual. The bag lists VOLUME, but I weighed the bag on an accurate food scale upon arrival, and it checked out at 5#, 3/4 oz.

The pieces are just the right size too. No "chips" as some have found.

I'm smoking some brined trout as I write this, and can say that the aroma is great--much better than the oak that I've been using. [Oak is too strong for fish and poultry, I've learned. I have a ton of oak for the wood stove...it's good for beef.]

There is a nice reference chart on the back of the bag recommending different wood for various meats. I'm likely to try a variety from Weber in the future. Cherry, Pecan, Mesquite, etc

The 5# bag is a good size unless you're smoking every week and need a jumbo quantity. I'm probably using 1/2 pound for 5 large trout. Thumbs up!

I used these chunks last weekend for both baby back ribs and pulled pork. It works well and the chunks were large. I only needed 2 chunks; they were soaked one hour & gave an hours worth of smoke. Not too much smoke and flavored the meat well. I'm ordering more.
