5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Grill. Excellent Value, May 1, 2002
I completed a thorough research of gas grills before I purchased a Weber Genesis Silver A Gas Grill, and I feel very confident that I made the right decision. Both the Genesis Silver A and B grills are outstanding. Which one you choose depends on your needs.

The Silver B is probably the better (but more expensive) choice for most people. But the Silver A is the best economy priced model on the market and perfect for anyone who does not need a lot of extra grill space. I bought the A model, so that tells you something.

Both the A and B earned the distinguished "Best Buy" rating from Consumer Reports. And both were graded for overall satisfaction with other brands that cost more money. The Weber Genesis grills are the cheapest grills for their level of quality and a good buy. (The top rated model was the $2,200 Weber Summit). They could easily sell for $100-$300 more than they do.

The Weber Genesis Silver grills are built to last a very long time. They have solid frames, stainless steel burners, porcelain-coated lids, etc. My grill looks like it will last 20 years. They come with an unusually long warranty. On the other hand, some of the cheaper other brands will rust out in a couple years and cook unevenly. The Webers are worth the extra money.

The Weber "flavorizer bars" are the secret to even, tasty grilling. They cook well.

My model has cast iron grates, which I prefer for better searing. But the porcelain-coated grates are easier to clean.

For most people the Genesis Silver B is the safer purchase, because it's larger. And you get more grilling and shelf space. You never know if you will need the extra space over the next ten years. Get the B if you expect to host parties and family gatherings, or if you have a large family.

The Genesis Silver A is better if you are looking for a more affordable grill. It really is a great value. You would be much better off with the Silver A than some of the other cheapo brands.

I bought the Weber Genesis Silver A because my small family does not need the extra space of the Silver B. We do gourmet cooking for ourselves, not a big party. It still looks big to me.

The Weber Genesis Silver grills are the best for taste and value in the long run

4.0 out of 5 stars Does it get any better???, April 1, 2002
By A Customer
I recently bought this Weber Genesis A propane grill. Let me begin by saying that the shipping of this grill was wonderful. Once Amazon shipped the grill through Eagle USA, two days later I got a phone call to schedule a delivery time. Upon arrival, I was expecting a very lengthy process to put it together. To my surprise it only took about 30 minutes. A word of caution though; the legs of my grill, pre-assembled by the factory, were put together backwards so the screws and holes didn't line up. Once I realized the problem it was an easy fix. Another problem that I ran into was that only 4 Flavorizer bars were sent and 5 were needed. I got on the phone to Weber Customer Service (open 24hrs) and have never received better service. In less than 5 minutes I was off the phone and they were shipping out a new one. Despite my inital inconvenience, the grill is wonderful, it cooks very well and unless you are cooking for a large group (more than 4), it is plenty big. I would definately recommend this grill to anyone in the market to pay a little more, but get a grill 5 times as good as anything else out there. I would have given this grill five stars if it hadn't been for my inital inconvenience....

I got my grill yesterday from Amazon, and discovered this fact only during assembly. A call to Weber revealed a few interesting facts: They sell several variations of the Genesis Silver A, but dont call out the differences. They dont reveal this cheap little trick on their web site. Only the Silver A sold at the big Home improvement store has the Cast Iron porcelain grates. Price: the same, no matter where you buy it.

Advice: if you want the good stuff, that Home improvement store is the place. If you are willing to fork over the list price but settle for cheap sheet metal grates, go to Amazon.

Tacky tacky tacky...

4.0 out of 5 stars Works great for us, May 28, 2002

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
We also researched grills including via Consumer Reports. We did not want a huge grill. We felt that many of the grills reported on by Consumers were like SUVs: mainly huge to satisfy the egos of the buyers. Anyway, the Weber Silver A filled the bill nicely. Big enough, but it looked functional rather than huge for huge's sake.

My experience with the delivery was also wonderful; when has a delivery/service person ever offered to deliver at a specified time AFTER dinner? Ours did.

Assembly was relatively easy; I did it myself, but I recommend a second person to help with the two bulky/heavy jobs (getting the burner unit out of the box and putting it on the legs). The packaging was very clever, relatively easy to deal with, and nearly entirely recyclable.

Finally, the taste test: We fired up the grill for about 15 minutes to burn off any manufacturing oil, and then next day tried cooking. Our first attempt was grilled mushrooms and vegetables (yes, we wanted a grill even though we are not big meat people!) It was wonderful! Easy to light, nice and hot, and quite controllable. It was so good, we made more vegetables that night, and chicken fajitas the next day. Big thick slices of grilled Vidalia onions are to die for!

I think the only small complaint is that the front burner is hotter near the gas-tank end than near the other end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Weber Genesis Silver A (Premium), May 23, 2003
By
Phlosar "Kim" (San Francisco, CA United States) - See all my reviews
I purchased the Premium Genesis Silver A: stainless steel cooking grates and flavorizer bars, a flip-up shelf under the fixed one, and a mica coating (the porcelain enamel has an extra layer, hard to describe). ...

The grill is very well made and lights really quickly. I was initially concerned about the 22,000 BTUs, but I think they are just right on this grill. The grill takes about 8 minutes to reach cooking temperature (500-550). Thus it is efficient.

I would recommend this grill for a family of 2-4. My cousin uses hers to cook for 10 or so. The grilling space is big enough. Having more space under the hood means more gas per use to heat it. Okay, I don't plan to cook a whole turkey, but I could easily cook at least two chickens. ....

A great grill and customer service is 24/7 and very helpful. I love my grill!

2.0 out of 5 stars Great Form. Poor Functions., July 24, 2002
By
Derek (Collegeville, PA USA) - See all my reviews
This grill is built like a tank. I think it will last a lifetime. That is good. Having said that, this grill has numerous functional deficiencies for the premium price it charges in the market. Which, I was hoping to avoid by paying a premium price and reading the consumer reports(more on this later). I Got free install at Sears so I cannot comment on the install process. However, I agree with the problems stated in the other reviews. Most significant being the uneven heating. It becomes a pain when you need to use most of the cooking surface. I am constantly forced to move items around through the entire cooking process. That is, if I want my food cooked evenly. I thought Weber Grills were famous for overcoming this problem. Now comes the long run problems magazines like Consumer Reports and other reviewers seem to miss. Near or slightly after the point when the propane tank is half used I ran into a MAJOR problem. When both burners are on high they can no longer produce the high level of flame as it did when the propane tank was full. The flame, at this point, is comparable to a medium level. When the back burner is turned off the front burner will once again emit flames at a high level. Therefore, I cannot cook on high using both burners when my propane tank is half empty. What do I do when I am cooking for a crowd? I purhased the grill last winter and this is my first summer with it. At this point, I would return it, if I could, but I cannot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect grill for 1-2 people, September 25, 2002

I spent most of the summer trying to dissuade myself from spending $$$ on a Weber over the other brands.... This grill has exceeded my expectations! I have used it virtually every day since I bought it a month ago and the meats, fish and poultry turn out succulent every time. Don't be afraid to spend the money - it is worth every penny!

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, April 9, 2002
By
Let me state upfront that this grill is a cinch to assemble---less than an hour---and a dream to start. Those may be its only virtues. (You may like the idea of the fullness (by weight) gauge, but watch your back when you try to load a full propane tank on the hook from a stooping position!!)
I think all the talk about direct and indirect cooking is just an excuse for very poor burner design. The burners are arranged around 3 sides of the periphery of the grill area which results in very uneven heat (unlike my old Ducane which had 2 U-shaped burners and very even heat). This design is ok if you just want to grill a few chops, but if you're cooking for a crowd, it's a mess, involving keeping track of where you moved the food from and where to. The direction manual says for direct cooking place the food over the heat source (apparently meaning around the periphery) and for indirect "adjust the burners on each side of the food to the temperature noted in the recipe and TURN OFF THE BURNER DIRECTLY BELOW THE FOOD". Figure this one out with 3 fixed peripheral burners and the back burner lighting from the front burner!
I guess it works if all the food is long cooking (defined as >25 minutes) and it all gets placed in the center of the cooking surface, but for a feast of hamburgers and hot dogs for the 4th of July you'll need the skills of a shell game operator.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Grill for small families, August 31, 2002
I replace my mid-range type grill with this one after 12 years. I wanted to avoid having to do as much work on this one as I did the old one, I was constantly changing the burner out. I have had this one about a year and it has worked great. The heat is very even, which was a problem in my old one I used to get hot spots that would cook to fast.

The only problem I have seen is the cooking area is pretty small, if you are feeding more than 4-5 people you will need to remove the bread grate to have enough cooking area. The could have been solved by having the bread grate attached to the lid and a little further up from the burner.

Overall this is a great grill and looks very solidly built.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Design - I love this grill, August 26, 2003
By

I used a Charbroil for about 9 years before replacing it with the Silver A. Talk about night and day. The quality of engineering and material is evident in every aspect of this grill. Even the packaging in the box is well made.

Putting it together (if you can call it that) took 15 minutes. It's essentially together in the box, you just need to turn a few screws to assemble the base. The grill itself is fully assembled for you - you just lower it on the base and you're done (you need two people to do this, though. The grill is heavy).

The grill grates are made of cast iron covered in porcelain .... I've used it for a couple of months now and haven't scratched the porcelain. The grates are in two pieces making it a joy to clean - each piece fits in the sink and can be cleaned individually. If you're not grilling all that much at a time you can just use one grate and then cut your cleaning in half. The drip tray is exceptionally well designed and easy to clean as well.

The Silver A has two burners. Indirect cooking works fine, but Weber's Silver B is larger and has 3 burners, meaning that you can use the center section for indirect cooking and have heat on both sides. With the smaller Silver A I turn the food around midway through cooking to make sure that it cooks evenly. This isn't a big deal, but if you do a lot of grilling this might be a point in favor of the bigger Silver B.

I have a family of 4 and have never found this grill to be too small. But if you do a lot of entertaining, you might want the extra room in the Silver B.

One more point, Weber makes a smoker tray for the Silver B, but not for the Silver A. This again is no big deal, I just make a smoker pouch out of tin foil. By the way, the grill is made with a tight fitting lid so that smoking works wonderfully. I often make beer-can chicken with smoked mesquite chips. It's the best tasting chicken I've ever had.

There are other grills out there that look like the Weber. I saw one at Sears. But just lifting the lid - you can tell the difference in quality. The Sears lid wobbled and felt half as light.

The Weber costs a lot more than Charbroil or Sears. But you're going to have it for awhile. Treat yourself and get a Weber.
