Great patio fireplace,

I had shopped around for a patio fireplace for a couple of years. I didn't like any of the ones sold in the chain stores (Lowes, Home Depot, Target, Sears, etc.). They were poorly built and looked like they would rust out quickly. The more quality built ones were too expensive for what essentially is just a fire ring. I stumbled across the Weber Wood Burning Fireplace and after a little research purchased it. Like all things Weber, it isn't the most flashy or even the best but it is well designed, sturdy, and should last for years. We have used ours once and I will share a number of observations and comments on previous reviews.
First, the small aluminum bowl underneath the fire bowl is not an ash catcher. It is a heat shield. This fireplace should not be used on a wood or composite deck. We have a brick patio and it is safely used there. Second, where we live (Central, OH) there is no need for a screen around the fireplace. Perhaps in more fire prone areas it would be a good idea, but then again, should you have an open fire in those areas? For my uses a screen is not useful or needed and would just make adding fuel more difficult. Third, to the commenter who said the fireplace is too smokey, it's the green wood you burned that produced the smoke, not the fireplace. I used well seasoned wood as anyone should and it produced about as much smoke as one would expect. Fourth, you do not need to use the lid but there is one major advantage to doing so when the weather is cool: the lid helps direct heat down rather than allowing it all to rise quickly. In other words, it keeps more heat down at chair level when you're sitting around the fireplace. Fifth, the lid does indeed smother the fire quickly. The lid is just tight enough to smother the fire. That's a huge plus since it means you don't have to wait until the fire dies out on its own to go inside. Nor do you have to douse the fire with water to put it out. In the case of this product, I'd recommend you don't do that anyway unless you want to ruin the porcelain finish. Sixth, it took about 30 minutes to assemble. Even though the handles are wooden, you will still need heavy gloves to move the lid out of the way and move the riser. I have the 2010 model and the handles are sturdy and solid.

Good fire kettle!,

Good fire kettle, easy to assemble and seems built to last a long time. The frame that holds the lid on top would only be needed if you make a fire in the drizzle. Otherwise, it's not needed at all. The smoke rises MUCH better directly up than being deflected sideways by the lid. Still, being able to have a nice, dry fire even in drizzle makes that frame worth having.
I put a bit of sand in the heat deflector on the bottom as well as in the bottom of the kettle. It makes a very good heat shield for the ground below the bowl. This fire kettle is well-made and does exactly what it claims to do. It is lightweight and will be very easy to move into the shed during the New England snowy winters. I LOVE the lid-- it keeps the ashes dry during rain so you don't have to tip the water out when you want to build a fire as you would with most other commercial fire pits. That in itself is a tremendous selling point!

Great Fire Pit for the Price!,

We recently bought a Weber grill, and in doing research came across this fire pit. Being a Weber, we figured it'd be of good quality. The pit does not disappoint. Its material is just like any other Weber charcoal barbeque, with the nice porcelain coated steel. The top and bottom are heavy-duty, solid construction, unlike cheaper aluminum pits found in big-box stores. We really like the top that becomes a snuffer and allows for quick, safe extinguishing. This seems like it will hold up for many years of enjoyment. Definately recommend!

Ours is OVER 31 years and STILL GOING STRONG!!!,

I found this product discussion while looking for parts for my 31 year old Weber Firepit. Looking for parts....not to replace it. That pretty much says it all. I think we've gotten out money's worth out of this amazing fire pit. It's still going strong! I don't want to replace it. The "clam" is still intact and working well....and we use ours year round. While new ones are only $149.00, mine only needs a couple of parts to make it like new again. The first thing to go was the heat deflector. It was a little less sturdy than the rest and it got dented and the holes stripped from using and moving it so much. That's okay because we use it on a cement patio and in the cement driveway and we really haven't needed it. And remember....it's a heat deflector....NOT AN ASH CATCHER. It really does work pretty well but with or without it, if you burn a fire in your grass yard, you will have a bare spot there for a long while. I know that from experience after my son and his friends had some fun in the yard one night. Ha! The next thing to go were the wooden handles. They get really hot and only lasted maybe 10 years. Imagine that! Only 10 years!! I just use gloves now. No problem. Next, the riser rusted out (mine was bought so long ago that it must have been made out of galvanized steel instead of aluminum) at a seam at about year 10 or 15. I actually kept using it for about 5 more years until it just became too unstable. No problem. We have fires without the top now and use the top to snuff out fires and to keep it dry. Note that ours has been outside in the elements for over 3 decades and I am sitting here looking for parts.....not a replacement....just parts! It just keeps on going and going and going! So, if I call Weber, I think I can buy a new riser. That's really all I need. If you are looking for a long lasting fire pit, look no further! Buy this one!

A fire pit and more,

I bought this wood burning fireplace this year and am very impressed with it. The lid comes in handy to snuff out the fire when done, it allows the bowl to stay dry 24/7 unlike the firepits at box stores, and it keeps animals away from any residual food if you cook on it. I have purchased a "Rome's #123 Camp Ring Grill Grate" at 24 & 1/2" to cook on as it fits exactly in the aluminum ring. It sits either high towards the top or low towards the bottom on the bolts of the assembly. however, I purchased four cheap spring clamps to attatch to the aluminum ring and my grate adjusts to any height by simply moving the springs up and down the four verticle posts and placing the grate on them. The bowl accepts fairly large logs which is nice. Don't forget to add a layer of sand to the bottom per the instructions to protect the enamel as that instruction is not easily seen. Time will tell how long it lasts but it seems very sturdy and other reviewers report a long life. I am very pleased with my purchase and highly recommend it.**** update in Jan 2012. I find I cook often with the Rome 123 camp ring just sitting on the top of the aluminum ring. I recommend you start cooking without the spring clamps I wrote about above to see if that works for you. The fireplace is still as good as new and continues to be a strong recommendation by me wether you intend to cook on it or not. Still very pleased!

This is one nice little fireplace. Easy to assemble and the quality is there to last just as to be expected with anything weber has its name on. Looking for a firepit without having to spend a fortune? One that will last season after season? This is it.

I was pleasantly surprised as the unit is bigger in real life than it appears in the pictures. This pit will hold fairly large pieces of wood that would otherwise fit in a wood stove or indoor fireplace. The construction is sturdy and from mostly good materials, as are all Weber products. The bottom ring that sits in the basin could have been less flimsy material in my opinion. We'll see how it stands up to heat. The top ring and all supports are stronger, thicker steel, as are the legs. The wood screws that hold the wood handles to their mounts are cheap. If you back one out, (say to turn the Weber logo right side up) it will strip. This was easily fixed with larger brass wood screws I had lying around the garage. I was slightly surprised that it had the "Made in China" stamp on the box. Most Weber replacement parts and charcoal grills I've seen are USA manufactured.
The ash-catcher is just for show, unless you want to drill holes in the bottom basin. I wouldn't recommend it. Anyway, it does look sharp. I'll put it to the fire test soon...

I was a little disappointed after receiving this product. I had an older Weber Outdoor Fireplace and was very impressed with it. I needed a new one so I ordered this. No mesh screen or grill included. I like the screen as I burn various types of wood and like to sit close to the fireplace. I had to have a 3rd party make me a custom screen. Also, a grill is required to keep the wood up and allow air flow and embers below the burning wood. Thank God I kept my old one! Also, I would have liked the lid to have the adjustable vent as the old one did but that is not a big issue. Also strange was the bowl under the unit that they tell you to fill with sand to stabilize it. I believe it is well stabled as it is. Still a good item but it could have been better like the previous model.

Have had this Weber fireplace a long time. It has worked great! I have so many fires that we have repainted the top, added new bolts to legs, and made new insert. Don't see why I'd buy new one but when I do--IT WILL BE THIS WEBER!

Well Built, long lasting,

This review is from: Weber 2726 Wood Burning Fireplace (Lawn & Patio)
We bought this model Weber Fireplace twenty years ago and have gotten much use out of it. It is a simple and reliable design. The wood handles are gone now and the paint is starting to fade. The lid holder is a bit worn out, but I would have to say I think we got our money's worth out of this fireplace. In fact we are using it today. The lid over the base keeps the fire pit from filling with water. I suspect this is one reason they last so long. I would definitely recommend this feature on any fire pit you buy. This design also lets you use it without the lid. Removing the lid holder lets you securely close the lid and smother the fire when it's time to go inside. That always provided me piece of mind if the wind kicked up later at night.
