I saw these and did a quick impulse buy, didn't really pay attention to the design. I thought the ring was to hold the end piece of food from falling off during grilling (which is a problem I often have), but it is to aid in pushing the food off the skewer. Traditional skewers don't have a big handle wasting precious real estate on the grill, these handles are very long, and quite useless when heated to grilling temperatures. You can't grab them to turn the kabob, you have to let them cool off, and by then you might as well have removed the kabob contents for serving. I think these would be fine for the little hibatchi or a tiny open grill where the handles can hang off the side away from heat. Oh well, live and learn.

If you're looking for skewers and you're looking for quality, buy these skewers. They are the best. Constructed of high quality material, they simply just work. The skewer blade is flat making turning your food a breeze with a nice handle, easy to grip with tongs, and when you're done, one quick flick with the built in pusher and off comes your food. Simplicity and functionality, what else could you ask for. I would highly reccomend these to anyone looking for a skewer set, I bought 2.

These are nice little skewers, especially for the price. Yes, the handles get hot during grilling--that's why you use barbeque mitts or a hot pad to turn them over. The little sliding ring is nice for getting foods that tend to stick (like chicken) off of the skewer. Plus, they are stylish enough that you could let them cool down a bit and then give each guest their own skewer with the food still on it. Looks much cooler than a half-charred bamboo skewer! My only complaint is they are a little lightweight and the shaft is spot-welded on, but mine are still doing fine. They may not be the best skewers ever, but they're not junk.
