5.0 out of 5 stars Great All Around Grill Comparable to the Best, January 28, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Weber 3742001 Genesis E-310 Propane Grill, Copper (Lawn & Patio)
Summary -- a great grill with even cooking across the grill, gets hot (over 600 deg F), with a bit of clunky charm and plenty of accessories.

OK -- I've had a very expensive grill (>$2k) for the past 5 years, and traded it for furniture when I moved. After researching grills, the great unwashed mass and periodicals indicated that Weber Grills had even temperatures across the grill. That was important because my former grill was hot, hot, hot but very uneven in temps across the grill. My only concern with the Weber was, "Is it hot enough?"

Quick Answer -- yes -- it climbed to 550 F fairly quickly and was still climbing. That was important because I want to grill Pizza.

Assembly - I hope you have your own hex set because the one supplied takes time. An auto screwdriver is a helpful addition. This is a 2 person bonding experience for assembly, at least for me, as I'm easily bored. The directions (pictures) are not bad but doesn't anyone write a manual using words in our native tongue? Assembly may take 1.5 hr +/- depending on your do it yourself talents.

First time use was steaks -- the grill is hot! and sears well -- they turned out perfectly - medium rare; Second time was chicken; next was scallops. They all turned out delicious and the grill is a snap to use.

I recommend the grill cover and adding the smokers kit if you want to slow cook ribs, chicken, etc. I laid a smoke box on the Weber twice and the grill produced fine smoke. I think the Weber kit will smoke the chips faster and hotter since it lays on the flavor grates.

The cons? OK -- it is clunky looking compared to my uber-expensive grill. But then, it was $649 (LP Version) and cooks better than Mr. Uber-Expensive.

Overall, I am very satisfied with this grill and highly recommend it.

This review is from: Weber 3742001 Genesis E-310 Propane Grill, Copper (Lawn & Patio)
I bought the Weber Genesis E-310 Copper grill to replace a number of cheap box store grills I've had over the years. The last box store grill I had lasted 4 years of frequent use, and the bottom (complete with burners) dropped out on my patio a few weeks ago completely rusted through. I had a charcoal grill in storage and I broke it out and used it for a few weeks, but it soon became apparent that I had to get a new gas grill. After much research I settled on the Weber.

The reasons I settled on this grill are as follows:

1. The firebox is cast , not thin sheet metal. This should be the first thing you look at on any new grill. Look at the material the firebox is made of, this most likely will determine the life of the grill.

2. Stainless steel burners. Made to last, and Weber stocks replacement parts. If you can't find replacement parts for the newest grills at the big box stores, do you think you'll be able to find them in a year or two after they come out with a new model?

3. Welded not riveted. If you wanna see the difference this makes, next time your in a box store, grab one of those riveted grills and torque it back and forth a few times... it will feel like a flexy cardboard box. This grill feels solid.

4. Side tables are sturdy. Same test as above. Get a big guy like me to push on your side tables and see how solid they are.

The Weber exceeds at all these tests. It feels like quality, and it feels like a grill that will last.

Buying experience:

First of all, the grill arrived a day early, taking 4 business days to arrive via freight. The grill ships in a VERY large box and it is most definitely too heavy and large for one person, no matter how big you are. Don't even think about it. I'm 6'2 around 215 and I couldn't even move it without much strain.

The grill was packed very well, very well thought out and well protected. I was impressed with the amount of thought that was put into the design of the packaging.

As an engineering student in college, I appreciate the effort required to not only clearly explain how to assemble the grill, but to machine the parts to fit together in such an accurate, well fit manner. I was REALLY REALLY impressed with the fit and finish of the grill, and although the instructions could have been made more clear, the pictures really do explain the process adequately enough, and I had no problems assembling the grill. It took me just over an hour from box opening to first light. The hardware provided is quality, and all the holes lined up easily. As previously mentioned, a 7/16" nut driver will make the process much quicker. The assembly of this grill was a pleasure.

The lighting system is very nice, and does the job quickly. All the burners worked perfectly, and the grill gets hot very quickly, reaching cooking temperature in 5-6 minutes for me. Some previous posters have commented negatively on the fact that the grill has the gas controls on the side table, taking up room. After I studied this setup, it's clear that the reason for this is because of the design of the burners. They run lengthwise along the bottom of the grill and the gas valve in the side table are mechanical valves incorporated into the burners, I'd guess that Weber did this because it's more reliable and complements their style of burner. I'd like to have the side table space too, but not at the cost of reliability.

All in all, the grill performed exactly as I expected (not such an easy feat) and exceeded my expectations in quality of manufacturing. Weber did an excellent job with this grill and I feel comfortable predicting that the grill lasts at least 2-3 times longer than any grill I've previously owned.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent gril, April 27, 2010

This review is from: Weber 3742001 Genesis E-310 Propane Grill, Copper (Lawn & Patio)
I was looking around for a new grill and decided to check consumer reports. According to CR's rating, this is the best grill on the market in its' price range. I also looked at other reviews and found that everyone that purchased this grill loved it. I am now one of those folks. Putting the grill together took about two hours. the instructions are 98% pics, which wasn't ideal (some verbiage to go along with the pics would have made assembly a lot easier). Once I started cooking on the grill I immediately saw the difference between this grill and less expensive grills. This grill is top of the line. Flare ups are virtually non existent. It is extremely easy to light and cooks evenly...you'd almost have to try to actually burn something. On previous grills the outside of the meat would be almost burned (due to flare ups) while the inside was still raw...not with this grill. I seasoned the grates with vegetable oil and baking in the oven for a total of 60 min (350 for 30 min, then wipe off excess oil and bake for another 30 min). I wasn't thinking and did it on a cool day...ended up with a nice burned oil smell in the house...but the seasoning worked great. Nothing sticks to the grates. This is definitely a quality grill, built well. I expect it to last many years...much longer than the $150 grills. If you like grilling, are looking for a high quality unit and don't mind spending a little more, this is the one for you!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Grill. Instructions Not So Much, September 13, 2010

I read a lot of reviews with people saying how tough this is to put together. To be honest, I had very few problems with assembly. But maybe since I live by an Ikea I've expanded my assembly-horizons by putting together a lot of *those* contraptions. I just took my time and went slow. It took about 5 hours or so. It didn't start out so good, though, as the instructions were actually printed wrong right off the bat at Step 1! I called Weber to talk to them and they disagreed that it was wrong (but it was). So, if you are assembling this, be sure you go to their website and get the newest version of the assembly instructions. The ones that were in my box were a previous version and were incorrect at Step 1. Weber was very accommodating on the phone, though, and made it very painless. I do have a couple tips. 1. Do your leak-check before you put the top side-panels on. That way you don't have to pop them back off again when you hook up the gas. 2. Turn the propane tank on slowly and all the way to full. Wait a full minute before lighting. This was a tip Weber gave me on the phone to keep the leak safety-feature from turning on. I had problems with the flames sputtering at first but this fixed it. And most importantly 3. These grills are currently only $499 at Lowe's folks! They are on clearance until next year. Grab a 10% off coupon like I did and you get it for $450!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good grill but quality control is a bit lacking, June 24, 2010

This review is from: Weber 3742001 Genesis E-310 Propane Grill, Copper (Lawn & Patio)
Been waiting for many a year to finally own a Weber grill, so when the time finally came my expectations were maybe a bit too high. First off, the positives.

The shipping line (I believe it was ABF) was superb. They called and set delivery times and placed the grill right outside my garage door. Box was undamaged and on a pallet. Once I got everything put together and I fired this bad boy up, it went to 500+ degrees in about 7 minutes. The cast iron grating that I thought was going to give me some sticking problems performed well. No sticking due to some manufacturing magic. (Porcelain cast iron is what I think its called) My first steaks came out with fantastic grill marks and perfectly done. Since that time I have cooked a variety of meats including shish-kabobs, chicken, and salmon. A friend came over with the salmon and he has the Weber Summit model with stainless grating. He couldn't get over how the fish wouldn't stick to the cast iron.

Now the negatives. As I said before the box was undamaged and on a pallet from the shipper. When I started unpacking, (Weber has a very intricate way of packing these grills) I found that the grill handle had a dent in it, farther in the right hand tool holder had a deep scratch. Both dent and scratch were highly visible when the grill was complete. Grease tray support was mangled, but since that is hidden in the cabinet I pounded it back in shape with a hammer and piece of wood. Finally the two cabinet doors were mis-aligned. I contacted Weber and they made good on all of it but for the money I felt it shouldn't have happened. Would have been five stars with out the dents and dings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Grill For the Money, August 13, 2010

Sure you can get a cheaper Big Box Grill, but it won't perform like a Weber.

I've tried using cheaper grills, but that is exactly what you get. Shoddy performance, hot/cold spots, ignition system that don't work, flimsy materials. This Weber has NONE of those issues.

It is well made and that is apparent the first time use it. The lid is heavy and solid. The ignition system lights on first press. Gas is easy to control and I haven't had any cold spots. Everything that I have grilled has come out perfectly. My family loves the perfectly seared steaks and chicken. Even the mundane, like hot dogs come out perfectly. The grill easily heats to over 500F,(I can get 550-600F as well) which is essential for searing.

The tank gauge has been pretty accurate and serves as a good reminder of when to get more gas.

We had some windstorms with over 70 mph that knocked my other grill down. The Weber held up and just sat there, waiting to come back for more. It's a Tank!

I had an issue with one of the control knobs, called Weber. Answered on first ring with a knowledge person. Shipped out new knob to get the next day, problem solved!

This grill doesn't come with a cover, but I would suggestClassic Accessories 73912 Veranda Cart-Style Barbecue Cover, Medium, 58 Inch Medium size. Fits perfectly and looks great!

Pros:

Quality Construction

Gets Hot and Stays that way

Great Customer Service

Cons:

A little pricey, but is built to last.

I finally tired of buying cheaply made grills at Home Depot that not only don't hold up, but they all seem to lack hot, even grill heat. This make it difficult to properly cook steaks and burgers, and my outdoor cooking reputation took a hit. The Genesis E310 arrived promptly. It is best to clear a level, clean spot to build this grill, and have all the small parts spread out nearby on a table. I used a flattened piece of the large carton to build mine on, in case I dropped a screw, it was easy to find, kept things square and from getting scratched up. In other words, don't build this thing on your lawn. Everything is easy to identify and only simple tools are necessary. I used a small B&D screwdriver. I was most impressed with the clear pictorial instructions and the fact that everything fit PERFECTLY. No forcing screw holes or tabs to align. It took me 1-1/2 hours total. This grill is substantially made and doesn't squeak and rattle like my old CharBroil which disintegrated in a couple of years into an embarassing heap. Once lit, the box reached 550 deg in less than 10 minutes. The steaks were perfect and evenly cooked on the first burn. The slide out drip tray makes cleaning easy, and the tents completely cover the burners, keeping them clean. Usually only the front and middle burners are needed to cook a few steaks, fire up the back one for full grill capacity. I would suggest that the casters could have been made larger to navigate a sometimes uneven yard, but that is a minor point. Most grills don't move much once in place. I wish I bought this years ago. I got the Weber-brand cover, it is much better quality.

The Weber Genesis gas grill was an instant favorite in this house! It replaced a 14-year old Weber grill, but it has many upgrades. The grates are heavy and leave great grill marks on the meat and vegetables. The style is so pretty, and the copper color quite unique. We have used it almost every night since it arrived. We also appreciated the delivery right to our garage, as this is a large and very heavy item.

This is a great grill! Love the copper color! It's made cooking out a pleasure. Our son purchased one like it and we knew he had researched them, so we were confident it was a good buy. Having 3 burners makes a big difference in cooking abilities. Expensive, but you sure get what you pay for. We feel it will last a very long time. We contacted customer service at Weber before we ordered it, and were impressed by them. Wish we had bought it sooner! Delivery was fast (considering it came from the West coast) and free! Delivery people were efficient and the grill was very well packaged. The book "Weber's Way to Grill" is a nice addition.

Following our former grill's (Kenmore) regulator catching fire and almost igniting the house, we wanted to make sure our next grill had a great reputation. So far we have not been disappointed with this grill's performance. It is smaller than our last one but seems to cook quickly and evenly. We do miss the side burner though.

Putting it together by myself took the better part of two hours, but was easy. The box was large and weighed about 180 lbs so I recommend finding some strong teenagers to help move it near to it's permanent home and assemble it there.
