I have had this grill for three years. It has been used almost daily for two seasons. Twice, I dropped the lid chipping the porscelin. It has been relocated by careless movers once. It still survives and is completely functional. Not only that, no parts have rusted on it. If I order a...lid, it will look like it just came out of the box.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good product with poor shipping track record
I ordered 3 of these, one after the other, and all came with significant chips and scratches to either the bowl or the lid. I finally called Weber and they replaced the damaged parts directly. If buying this product I would buy it in a store, not on line.

This review is from: Weber 458001 18 1/2-Inch One-Touch Gold Charcoal Grill, Blue (Lawn & Patio)

Maintenance is easy. In fact, if the grill is emptied thoroughly, the ash catcher can be used to hold the rinse water if you are unable to clean it outside (you do have to empty it often). I have, in fact, cleaned this grill in my kitchen, with out much of a mess. It really hasn't been any more difficult then cleaning a regular oven.

Cooking is very even, the swing-outs on the grid make adding charcoal easy during indirect cooking. I purchased a set of rails to hold the charcoal to each side. I insert my drip pan in the middle, and then put more charcoal as needed in the grill without disturbing the food by opening up the swing-outs in the grate to add charcoal. This is a very handy feature. For direct cooking, you just place the charcoal over the bottom grid as per instructions.

The manual contains several useful recipies to get you familiar with this cooking device. I highly recommend reading it, and following its instructions. The Weber One-Touch Gold 18-1/2" is a worthwhile purchase if you are cooking for one or two people, and will more then pay for its self as compared to eating brats at the hot dog stand. Buy this grill, and you'll eat T-bones and baked potatoes for FAR less then at a steak house, for a very long time!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Design, July 3, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Weber 458001 18 1/2-Inch One-Touch Gold Charcoal Grill, Blue (Lawn & Patio)
The classic Weber One-Touch charcoal grill is an example of excellent engineering and design. I recently purchased the 18 1/2" model and have found it to be very effective and easy to use.

The shape of the kettle and lid distributes heat evenly across the cooking surface. The heat can be easily controlled using the vents to allow more or less airflow. Easy to assemble. Cleanup is quick. The simplicity of the design means there is little that can break or go wrong with it.

Obviously the engineers at Weber put a lot of thought into how people will use the product and came up with a truly elegant design. Brilliant!

5.0 out of 5 stars This grill is fabulous!, July 20, 2005

I am no pro at grilling, but this grill makes it all so easy! It was easy to put together, easy to use, and easy to clean up. Everything I toss on it turns about perfectly grilled and absolutely yummy! There are cheaper charcoal grills out there, but if you're a petite woman, like me, who doesn't grill for a living, it is well worth the extra money for the little conveniences of this grill. I got the 18 1/2 inch grill, and it has plenty of room for preparing dinner for 4-6 adults. Since putting my grill together, I have cooked out every weekend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Bachelor Grill, May 14, 2009
By

This grill is a great performer. As a single guy who typically grills for one, the 18.5" surface provides enough room that I can cook several meals at once. There's plenty of room to do indirect grilling, and even indirect "beer can chicken" with the coals arranged in a circular fashion around a pie tin. If you're only cooking for one or two people, you don't need anything bigger.

The most innovative feature on this grill? The hinged side flaps on the grilling surface, which you can pull up with tongs to drop in more coals or wood. I use a lot of hickory, and when it comes to adding more smoke, being able to get directly at the coals without disturbing the food is a huge advantage. No more fumbling with insulated gloves trying to lift the whole grate up.

Assembly instructions really could have been better (actually there were no instructions, just one tiny drawing). I couldn't figure out how the ash collector connects to the rest of the components, there were metal tabs on mine which weren't depicted in the diagram, and bending them out of the way didn't help. So I left it off, I just empty the ashes onto the patio and rinse them into the yard. Not a huge inconvenience but it kept me from giving a 5-star review.

If you're the type who buys a $10 imported rust-magnet grill at Wally World each spring only to watch it rot all year long, break that cycle and get a Weber One-Touch.

If your gonna cook with charcoal this is the grill for you. High quality, won't rust like the imitations that are made in china. The kettle shape directs the heat and cooks perfectly. Made in USA!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Item, June 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The Weber 18.5" grill has worked out well so far. Others commented that bachelors who primarily cook for just themselves only need the 18.5" size; I agree, but if you'd like to grill numerous items at once (i.e. 4 burgers and 4 dogs) the surface is quite crowded and you may consider selecting a size or two up from this one.

Two notes: 1) I wish the legs on this grill were longer (say 4-6") as I'm not 5 feet tall and I don't like bending/leaning over as much as I do (6' tall), and 2) the grill assembly instructions weren't too bad, however it was a bitch to install the ash collector mechanism underneath the grill -- if you haven't ever done or seen this attached (a video of the installation procedure online would've been great) it may be a bit frustrating as you're trying not to scratch the grill while pulling, rotating and pushing it into position.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent quality!, November 30, 2009

I always thought Weber products were overpriced. This is one of those products that "You get what you pay for, and you pay for what you get." Bottom shell was damaged in shipment. No problem. Called Weber and I had a free replacement in 5 days. A pleasure to deal with.

Pros: Ash catcher, Hinged cooking grate, air control, proper distance from coals(avoid burning), charcoal rails(optional), cover(optional)

Cons: None

I had considered the Weber Silver, but the Weber Gold had the Ash Catcher & Hinged Cooking Grate which are not available on the Silver model. These features were worth their weight in gold to me. Well worth the additional $$ difference.

It's everything I wanted in a charcoal BBQ, although next time I'd probably splurge for the 22-inch model.

4.0 out of 5 stars very good, but flimsy aluminum pot, June 30, 2010
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The steel is solid. The lid covers the grill perfectly. The aluminum pot is of lesser quality than the gold 22.5 inch models. The aluminum part that holds the pot is thin and can be bent in all shapes and forms with little effort, but it serves its function. I probably would go with the cheaper silver model if I was to do it again. I do like that the very bottom of the grill is aluminum so it will not rust if water collects after I clean the grill. So far this weber has worked as desired. I like the portability of the 18.5 size. I can lift it easily after a cleaning and stick it in the garage. I can see I lifetime of delicious meals ahead of me. And this is made in the U.S.A. We can make good things here.

5.0 out of 5 stars My husband loves his new grill!, July 13, 2009
I purchased this grill for my husband's birthday, and he loves it.
It cooks much faster than the smaller Weber grill we have. My husband prefers cooking with charcoal--and will not own a gas grill. We have been Weber grill users for 44 years! Nothing better than a Weber!
