Weber Genesis S Series Gas Grills

The Right Stuff

From its generous cooking space to its 7mm diameter stainless-steel rod cooking grates, the Genesis S series gas grill literally shines with quality and craftsmanship. What's more, its front-mounted control knobs free up both side tables to provide expansive prep space on this vision in stainless steel.

Weber's Original Gas Grilling System

Notice how sturdy the shroud feels as it opens smoothly on its hinges? See how the burners roar to life on the very first try? Delighted by how simple it is to achieve a mouthwatering meal every time? It's no accident. Weber spends countless hours perfecting the grilling systems on its gas grills, assuring easy assembly, an evenly heated cooking surface, and precision controls so you can tone things down or up to the perfect heat level for direct or indirect cooking.

Cookbox and Shroud

The cookbox houses the components of the cooking system: cooking grates, burner tubes, Favorizer Bars, and the grease management system.

Made of cast aluminum, Weber's gas-grill cookboxes are durable, efficient, require minimal care and maintenance, and can withstand the heat needed to grill at any temperature. In addition, the shape of the cookbox, when combined with the shroud, allows for the proper circulation of heat around food for even cooking whether you're using direct or indirect heat.

Cooking Grates

Weber gas-grill cooking grates come in three exceptional materials: porcelain-enameled steel, stainless steel, and porcelain-enameled cast-iron. Each type retains heat evenly and sears food beautifully. Porcelain-enameled steel cooking grates are durable and easy to clean. Stainless steel rod cooking grates make lovely sear marks, hold heat very well, and clean up with ease. Porcelain-enameled cast-iron cooking grates combine the ease of porcelain-enameled with the superior heat retention of cast-iron--no need to season and easy to clean.

Burner Tubes

Weber's burners are made of high-grade stainless steel, which will stand up to the small amounts of water found in liquid propane and natural gas. The burner tubes are made of a singular piece of steel with no welds, making them stronger and more resistant to rust and burn-through. And while they are protected from grease drippings and food by the Flavorizer bars, Weber cart gas grill burner tubes can be cleaned easily by gently brushing with a Weber stainless-steel grill brush.

Controls for each burner give you the ability to grill by the direct or indirect method. Even more, the burners are spaced to provide heat across the entire cooking grate, and the burner valves have infinite control settings, so you can fine-tune the heat levels.

Flavorizer Bars

The innovative Flavorizer bar system, originally created by Weber, is designed perfectly to perform a variety of functions on the Spirit , Genesis, and Summit gas grills. Angled just right, the Flavorizer bars catch drippings that smoke and sizzle, adding flavor to your food. Any drippings not vaporized by the Flavorizer bars follow the slope of their unique angle and are funneled away from the burner tubes, down into the grease management system. Not only does this help prevent flare-ups inside your grill, but it also protects the burner tubes from becoming clogged.

Made of either porcelain enamel or stainless steel, Flavorizer bars are durable, long lasting, and easy to care for. Periodically brushing them clean with a Weber stainless-steel grill brush will help keep Flavorizer bars performing at their best.

Grease Management

When juices drip off the meat, they funnel down to the Flavorizer bars, and then what doesn't vaporize into wonderful smoke goes down into the grease management system. The grease management system consists of an angled grease tray and catch pan. The grease tray rests beneath the cookbox a safe distance from the burner tubes to prevent the grease from catching fire. Grease is channeled down the grease tray and into the catch pan. Both the grease tray and catch pan are easy to clean. The tray easily slides out of the cabinet for cleaning, and when the catch pan starts to fill, simply remove the disposable drip pan, toss it in the trash, and replace it with an empty pan.

Fuel Gauge

A fuel gauge lets you know exactly where you stand on fuel at all times.

Sear Station Burner & Side Burner (Model S-330 Only)

Maximize the heat without minimizing grilling space. This high-powered sear burner is designed to step up the heat on demand for searing. Even more, a flush-mounted side burner lets you multi-task while grilling.

Genesis S-310 LP Gas Grill

As part of the Genesis S series, the S-310 gas grill has a front-mounted control panel with three stainless-steel burners and an individual electronic ignition system. The unit offers a 38,000 BTU per hour input, and its total capacity consists of 637 square inches of cooking space (a 507-square-inch primary cooking area and a 130-square-inch warming rack). The unit includes stainless-steel cooking grates, stainless-steel Flavorizer bars, porcelain-enameled heat deflectors, and an enclosed cart with painted steel doors, stainless-steel handles, and a stainless-steel shroud with a center-mounted thermometer. It also provides six tool hooks, two heavy-duty front-locking casters, and two heavy-duty back swivel casters. Requiring an LP tank to operate (not included), the gas grill measures 30 inches long by 60 inches wide by 64-1/2 inches high and carries a five-year limited warranty.

I did plenty of online, and in-store research before settling on the Weber S-310. Over the years, Weber has made several changes in their grills, but retain the same model numbers. So pictures and reviews of the S-310 might be confusing, or obsolete, if they were for a model sold a year or two ago. I believe this grill (6550001) is the latest model of the Genesis 310 series (as of April 2011). The S-320 includes a side burner, and the S-330 includes a sear station burner. Other than that, I think they are all the same. This grill also comes in several colors (E-310), as well as stainless steel (S-310). What was a bit disappointing to me, was that not all surfaces are stainless. The cabinet sides, back and interior are all gray baked enamel. It's only the doors, table extensions, and grill lid that are stainless steel.

We had an older grill with a side burner that we never used. Since the grill is on our back deck, it is just easier and faster to do side burner cooking in the house. For that reason, we saved some money, and opted for the version of this grill without the side burner.

It weighs about 175 lbs in the box, so you will need help manhandling it to where you want to assemble it. Parts are packed well, in a very sturdy box, and arrived in perfect condition. The assembly instructions include very little text, just pictures, but are easy to figure out. All the fasteners and pieces fit together easily without any problems. Taking my time, double checking the instructions, and being careful with assembly, it took me 2-3 hours to get it unboxed and assembled, ready to grill. All the exposed stainless steel surfaces came covered by some sort of plastic film that you will need to peel off before using the grill.

I too was tired of replacing the grill every couple of years. This certainly will not be the case here, this one looks and feels like it will be around a long time.
Very solid, heavy, flawless finish, and it just plain works.

Now the only issue I have found is that you have to be very carefull while covering the grill. I have returned to the grill to find that somehow while covering the grill the burner knob(s) have been turned on. So far this has happened twice. I only discovered this due to the natural gas smell while walking past the grill. Maybe a case of just having to be more carefull, but seems to me this should be a no brainer and the burners should not be able to accidentally be turned on so easily. Maybe a stiffer detent spring on the knobs?

Still, the finest grill I have ever owned.

UPDATE 7/15/11: Weber customer service contacted me regarding the knob issue.
Basically there is no fix and Weber seems to know this is possible. They say it is crucial to turn off the main gas line valve when not in use. The only solution at this time. Not a deal breaker but I was hoping for a bit more. Grilling very frequently and the Weber shines, by far the most even ang consistant cooking grill ever.

Weber upgraded their Genesis line by putting the burner controls upfront, thus giving you 2 large side surfaces for plates and other items. I had an old Summit Silver with s side burner I never used. Although this is a 3 burner variety it gets very hot and does a good job cooking food fast.

My main compliant, and it is not a trivial one is that the bottom of the cart has all these vent slots cut into the sides and back. This lets any rain water pour into to the bottom and you get a mess of a pool of water in the bottom of the cart. Plus water makes its way into the grill drip pan and you get a pool of grease and water in it. Just lovely. Why do you need vent slots on the bottom of the cabinet? If you say it is for gas venting then they should have been configured the slots differently. Water should not pour into the bottom cabinet. I am thinking of getting plexiglass cut and bolt it to the back and sides but it would alter the grill look.

Essentially you cannot grill with this unit in the rain if you start a meal and then rain starts without having the water incursion problem.
I believe this cart design is universal across the Genesis line and maybe Summit also. The propane tank is inside the grill now so aesthetically it is more pleasing. Maybe this was the reason for all the slots. Just not well thought out by Weber. Maybe the designers live in the desert where it doesn't rain.

Your best option I think is to go out and get a grill cover and be faithful about keeping it on after the grill is used.

Amazon has nice non-Weber variety covers that are much better looking than the basic black Weber covers that are kind of flimsy by reports.

So my overall rating on the grill 3 stars, reduced by the design flaw with the cart. Buy the cover immediately or else keep sponges on hand.

I owned a Weber Genesis grill for 10 years before replacing it with this one. My old grill featured stainless grates, stainless burners and stainless flavorizer bars. I gave the grill away and it is still going strong. I cleaned it several times each year and I was always able to make each part shine. Not one bit of rust.

After 1 year of owning the Weber Genesis S-310 I have come to find that the stainless steel parts are not really stainless. I keep the grill covered when not in use and it is kept on my covered balcony throughout the year. I cleaned the parts yesterday and came to find that the flavorizer bars were severely rusted as well as the drip pan.

Many of my friends have warned me that Weber started using cheap quality stainless steel that will rust. I am not sure how they can call something stainless if it rusts after one year.

I called Weber customer service today and they said my parts cannot be replaced under warranty until they are crumbling in my hand.

I bought a stainless steel grill to avoid replacing parts. It looks like Weber has decided to put profits ahead of quality. What a shame. I always thought they made a great product but this will be the last time I buy a Weber.
