5.0 out of 5 stars previous reviewers sound confused
I feel the other reviewers rated this incorrectly. This is not the top grate for your food, rather this is for putting the charcoal on in the bottom section. There is no flip-up side option for this, there is no alternate sizing either. It just goes on the bottom of the kettle bowl so you have space for your coals. It is extremely heavy duty, my original grate from...

2.0 out of 5 stars Misleading size description
I was looking for a grill grate that was no larger than 16.5" from side to side, and this posting claimed that the grill grate measured 16.5" in diameter. That is not an accurate measurement. The grill measures 16.5" INSIDE of the external circle, and 17" in diameter when measured from end to end. I need this grate to fit INSIDE of a 16.5" flower pot, which this...

There is no flip-up side option for this, there is no alternate sizing either. It just goes on the bottom of the kettle bowl so you have space for your coals. It is extremely heavy duty, my original grate from 1980 is almost rusted through and I have no need to replace it. But if you do, I'm sure it can last another 20 years.

5.0 out of 5 stars A quick tip!, November 13, 2007
This review is from: Weber 72801 Replacement Charcoal Grates (Lawn & Patio)
These are pretty good, but you can make them better by getting two of them. No, I don't get a commission from Weber! This tip is mostly for those who use lump hardwood charcoal, which has a lot of irregular pieces. With a single grate, you lose a lot of small pieces through the grate. But if you get two grates, place them face to face, with the grill bars offset by a half (I hope that made sense) . The effect is a grate with twice as many bars, and much smaller gaps. Problem solved. You still get good airflow, but you get to keep those small pieces where they need to be - in the fire.

Charcoal grate fits full size Weber kettle perfectly. I wasn't clear prior to purchase if this fit the mid-size or full size Weber.

The grill measures 16.5" INSIDE of the external circle, and 17" in diameter when measured from end to end. I need this grate to fit INSIDE of a 16.5" flower pot, which this certainly will not do. Very displeased with the seller on this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heavy Duty, August 16, 2010

This is a very heavy gauge metal and much sturdier than the original grate that came with the Weber grill. I have been very pleased with its performance and because of its gauge I expect it will last as long as the grill. I agree with one of the reviewers that folks are probably thinking this is the upper grill that the food sits on but it is not - this is the lower grate that the charcoal sits on and it fits my Weber just right.

These things wear out in two or more years, depending on how much you use your grill. I'm not aware of any alternative, so five stars! And what's with all the big box hardware stores that sell Weber grills? None in my area (both the orange one and the blue one) supply this vital replacement part.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good quality, misleading size, June 27, 2009
This review is from: Weber 72801 Replacement Charcoal Grates (Lawn & Patio)
I bought this grate to use as a cooking grate for a different brand of grill which really needed a 16.75 inch grate but this one is the closest I could find and will "work". Although it is designed as a charcoal grate I seasoned it with oil as I would season a cast iron pot and I expect it will hold up well for many years.
That said I think both Weber and Amazon need to provide better size information. While it is manufactured for the Weber series the size listed on the item and the size listed in Amazon are just plain wrong. The actual size of the grate is 17 inches diameter, not 16.5 as Amazon states and not 22.5 as Weber states. It would be nice if the details provided in the description were accurate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Weber Replacement Grill, July 14, 2007
This review is from: Weber 72801 Replacement Charcoal Grates (Lawn & Patio)
The replacement grill is wonderful. It was the correct size and the construction was better than the original. I would reccomend this product to anyone that is looking to replace or to upgrade their current barbeque grate.
