Amazon.com Review

At first glance, Weber gas grills look like something that might be shot into space or driven in a Formula 1 race rather than the sleek cooking machines they really are. This is an understandable mistake, because with its Genesis series of grills, Weber has made the time-honored tradition of outdoor cooking state-of-the-art, virtually putting an entire kitchen at your fingertips and on your patio. The Genesis Gold B features a generous 611 square inches of total cooking area, which includes the primary cooking area, a warming rack, and a warm-up basket. Its three stainless-steel burners supply an input of 39,000 Btu's per hour and provide 550-degree broiling temperatures without wasting fuel. In place of the lava rock, pumice stone, or flat metal plates found in most common gas grills, Weber grills feature the company's patented porcelain-enameled Flavorizer bars, which do not retain dripped fats. Instead, juices sizzle and smoke when they hit the Flavorizers, eliminating potentially disastrous flare-ups and imparting a delectable smoky flavor to your feast.

Getting the grill ready to cook that feast doesn't take long, either. Weber's Crossover ignition system enables you to effortlessly start all three burners, which have been positioned to heat your food evenly. A dual-purpose thermometer included in the front of the grill unit measures the temperature under the double-walled stainless-steel hood; it can also be removed and used as a meat thermometer to ensure a thoroughly cooked meal every time. And you won't need to scramble for seasonings (or recipes--Weber provides a cookbook) or use a separate table while cooking, thanks to several convenient features. In addition to the two handy work surfaces on either side of the unit, a wire condiment basket hangs along the front of the grill, keeping condiments, spices, marinades, or other barbecue necessities close at hand. A wire shelf is situated beneath the grill and stretches the length of the unit, and three wire tool hooks hang below the work surface, ready for your spatula, meat fork, and basting brush. Weber's propane gas grills also come with a 20-pound LP tank and a precision fuel gauge.

With its lid open, the Genesis Gold B measures 61-1/2 inches tall, 69-1/2 inches wide, and 33 inches deep. This powerful cooking machine is easily moved, however, thanks to its crackproof all-weather wheels and locking casters, which prevent it from moving when you're cooking. While a grill cover is recommended to protect your grill from the elements, Weber's engineers did take outdoor storage into consideration and, with the help of entomologists, added special spiderproof screens to prevent the burner tubes from being clogged by cobwebs or nests.

This grill features Weber's Stop Watch engineering. Now it takes approximately 10 minutes to assemble your grill with no more than eight fasteners and a single tool. Weber even throws in the tool. Manufacturer's limited lifetime warranty. --Benjamin Reese

Product Description

Genesis Gold gas grills include two model types- B and C. B models have three burners, and C models have three burners and a side burner. All models feature a unique, patented Flavorizer bar cooking system, patented hanging LP fuel scale (LP models only), two granite-style thermoset work surfaces, Crossover ignition system, solid robot-welded carts, and a double-walled stainless steel hood. Stainless steel is a very durable choice of materials, but intense heat will cause it to discolor. Weber engineers solved this problem with a double-walled design. Air trapped between the walls insulates the handsome brushed stainless exterior maintaining its showroom condition. All Genesis Gold models also feature Weber's Stop Watch Engineering because the last thing you want is a hassle putting your grill together. Now all it takes to get your grill together is ten minutes, no more than eight fasteners, and a single tool. We even throw in the tool. All propane models include a 20-pound propane tank. All models also feature a limited lifetime warranty.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best, if not thee best, grill for the price., April 16, 2002

This review is from: Weber 2003 Model 3280001 Genesis Gold B Propane Gas Grill (Lawn & Patio)
Started researching for gas grills online and at the local home depot and lowes and narrowed my choice down to a weber. Nothing comes close in price to weber's use of stainless stell burners, grills, flavorizer bars and hood. I chose the gold B model because I would rarely use the side burner and if I did needed it, I would use the stove in the kitchen.

The free delivery by Eagle Transport was excellent. Took about 14 days from initial order to receiving grill. Eagle delivery person phoned ahead on cellphone to alert of actual time of arrival. Packaging was very good and instructions are well laid out. You definitely need two people to set this grill up. I muscled the grill together myself (too ignorant to wait for help) in about half an hour but I advise against this because of possible injury. Otherwise setup was 8 bolts along with putting the side and bottom trays together.

The grill wheels around very easily and the stainless cover feels heavy duty and looks beautiful. To me, this grill looks more expensive than it is. This grill feels like a tank; nothing rattles. The stainless steel grills look like they would last forever...Grill ignited on the first click and the other burners came on without a hiccup. Temperature came up to 500 degrees in a few minutes. I cooked beer can chicken at 350 using the indirect method by turning the top and bottom burners to low. Temperature stayed constant and I didn't have to fiddle with the controls after that.

The correct grill cover for this model is the 9859 not the 9957 that amazon recommends. Check the weber website; it says the 9859 is for the 2002 models which this new gold B is...The cover [I bought separately]fits perfectly is very heavy duty. Highly recommended. Another tip that I want to share is to line the disposable aluminum drip tray with foil so you don't have to buy additional trays. Just put new foil in after heavy build-up.

Other than recommending the wrong (and more expensive) cover, I still give amazon high marks for ordering process and availability of product. I hope this review helps with your grill search.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a Weber, so it's got to be good!, April 21, 2002

This review is from: Weber 2003 Model 3280001 Genesis Gold B Propane Gas Grill (Lawn & Patio)
I got tired of buying a low-end grill and having to replace it or half the parts every couple of years. This time I decided to do it right and my research ended with the Genesis Gold B. I chose the Gold B because it offered all the features I wanted and none that I didn't want. I've had grills with a side burner and I never used it. There is an identical model to this one that does offer the side burner, if that is something you require. This grill is excellent! Heavy construction, easy to put together and just a great product all around. They advertise that it only takes ten minutes to put together and they are about right. It took me about 15-20 minutes and that includes interruptions from the kids! The grill fired up immediately and seemed to reach the surface temp of the sun in a matter of seconds! Everything cooks quickly and evenly.

Weber and Amazon even get the shipping part right. The box was very well packed and arrived without so much as a scratch. I even got it several days before I expected to! Just be careful not to get the grill cover that is suggested here at Amazon. The one offered for this grill is not the correct one as stated in one of the other reviews. The 9859 is the correct cover.

This is probably the best grill you can get for the price before you get into the custom, built-in models. Some grill experts may disagree, but for an every-day, average, don't-live-at-the-country-club kind of guy, this grill is the best!

5.0 out of 5 stars Is The Weber Genesis Gold B Too Expensive ?, April 14, 2002

This review is from: Weber 2003 Model 3280001 Genesis Gold B Propane Gas Grill (Lawn & Patio)
OK, you bought a couple of those cheaper grills in the past, and were DISAPPOINTED. They last a year or two, and then, things don't work. The grill starts rusting, and the food never really tasted that great. Now you believe there must be a better way to grill. And there is. Even if you are comparing this grill to other Weber grills, nothing written so far, can tell you what a great value the Genesis Gold B is.

This grill heats up to 550 degrees within 3 minutes. The burners light up quickly. It is easy to maintain. The rotisserie attachment is a wonderful addition. I also purchased Weber's Big Book of Grilling, which has some tasteful recipies. When Weber builds a better grill...it is actually better! Definitely worth the money! Small items I don't like: no smoker box for the Genesis grills, and the lighted handle (for night grilling) doesn't fit the Genesis.
