4.0 out of 5 stars Webroot has done a good job on my PC

Stay the heck away from this software!!I personally use the Spy sweeper program which does come with this software but the entire Webroot Security Esssentials is a big JOKE! I used this software for about a month because i needed a new anti-virus and firewall.I figured since i was running the Spy Sweeper anyway(which is a good program)the rest of Webroots products must just be as good.Boy was i wrong!! As soon as i installed it,i had nothing but problems with it.Wouldnt update itself and would freeze my computer up all the time.Plus i couldnt connect to the internet!Heck the software would even freeze itself up.I contacted Webroot and they did respond.I had to completely uninstall the Firewall that came with the software and download some other version Firewall they sent me.This worked for about 3 days and then it was back to freezing up again and no connecting.I was very disappointed considering the Spy Sweeper itself is a decent program.I wrote back to Webroot wanting a refund but i got no response after that(figures). If you want to keep your pc running correctly, stay the heck away from this software!!! You can buy the Spy Sweeper separately (without anti-virus) which works pretty good but stay the heck away from their firewall and 2nd rate anti-virus program!!Do you see the guy on the front of the box thats smiling?Well he's smiling because he knows he just sold you some junk software and your not gonna get a refund!!

I had Webroot Spysweeper and Norton Antivirus on my PC. The Spysweeper caught a trojan virus that Norton failed to detect so I decided to try Webroot Internet Security Essentials. The software has a training mode for the firewall where it studies the behavior on your PC for a number of days. I recommend that you set up this training mode to keep the firewall from blocking internet connections and software programs already on your computer. Webroot has been on my computer for about three months and has blocked 1 malware program and also spyware. I cannot say about their customer service because I have not yet had to use it. I have noticed that my computer does run a bit slower with Webroot, but overall I am happy with it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not ready for prime time, July 6, 2009
This review is from: Webroot Internet Security Essentials 3-User (CD-ROM)
I've tried several anti-virus programs, both free and paid-for, and most have worked well enough, whether on Windows XP or Vista. However, since getting an HP 64-bit desktop, it's been more complicated. Webroot Internet Security Essentials (which I had just renewed for about $50) was becoming a disaster. My computer kept freezing up. Start-up was a guessing game, often requiring several attempts to get past it hanging up or freezing before all the startup programs were loaded. And after my computer did start fully, Webroot firewall needed constant tweaking; for example, it periodically blocked MS Outlook, requiring me to manually reset permissions allowing it access to the internet. Moreover, Webroot reached the point where it could not finish a virus/spyware scan without freezing up halfway through. I was beginning to realize that the program was a real problem (duh). I need to say, however, that Webroot continues to work okay on my 32-bit laptop. As for free versions of AVG Anti-Virus and Avast!, I haven't tried them on my 64-bit machine, but they worked well on my previous computers.

I decided to try Vipre Antivirus+Antispy after discovering it on Amazon. Vipre is the first anti-virus program I've found that works seamlessly and invisibly in the background, allowing me to just work (or play) without interruptions. After two weeks, no more problems--startup goes smoothly, and my computer hasn't frozen up since installing it. Maybe it's only my computer, but so far my experience with Vipre has been a good one. The only caveat is that the virus and spyware scans can take a very long time, although the scans work in the background and do not seem to slow down normal operations. Based on my experience, 64-bit Vista users should avoid Webroot and try Vipre instead.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This. It seriously crashed both my computers, August 14, 2010

I have used WebRoot's SpySweeper for years. Mostly, to catch and remove spyware. This continued up to version 6. Then, running it, I was informed that there's a new version 7. Having previously trusted SpySweeper, I updated both my computers at the same time.

Bad mistake!!!

What got installed was a new program that just grabbed control of my computer and started running stuff. Previous versions allowed me to precisely control what it should do. This new one has no options, no way to stop it, no way to uninstall it. It got both computers (XP Pro SP3) into a state where the only thing I could do was a total disk reload from a months-old Acronis backup.

Lost more than a day of work restoring the machines, and lost months of data. This was a disaster.

This program has four parts. You have to install all of them. When I installed the progams, my computer could not connect to my LAN. Probably because the firewall program conflicted with my far superior firewall program. Once I uninstalled this program, I could then connect to my LAN. There is a reason that it was discounted to a price much less than the spyware program alone.

the complaints about this program were based on earlier versions, and the bugs have been worked out. wise runs fine on win7 and xp sp3. if you buy an earlier version, webroot will let you update on their site to the latest version in addition to definitions.

The software works OK on my PC. The instruction said you don't need to remove the old version to install the new one. But, when I installed the new version, I have to remove the old one.
