2.0 out of 5 stars Great when it works, crippling when it doesn't...which is most of the time
I bought Webroot Internet Security to get rid of some extra stubborn adware and viruses that infected my computer via a thumb drive. Well, it worked great to get rid of those issues. Since then (3 weeks) its become almost unbearable to live with and my computer is no slouch: 3.4Ghz dual core processor, 2Gbs of Ram, and a 10,000 rpm hard drive running XP Pro...

I have gradually migrated all my PCs to Webroots Internet Security Essentials after much frustration with Norton (have used Norton since 1982)and McAfee and MS Defender. I liked that Webroot found spyware in my archived hard drive files that other programs had scanned and missed. And Webroot pipes up when it blocks something, which others may block without letting you know and then you have a non-responding program with no obvious cause. You do have to install it right for it to work without too many problems however. I also agree Webroot support hasnt been very responsive when I had problems I had to noodle out myself. As for the reviews posted; you can check the tick box so it logs into the backup accont automatically, and you can configure the priority Webroot has over CPU time. The default is "high" and you can set it down. I also have scheduled cleanups, sweeps and backups in the middle of the night so there is no competition. You must use the training feature and then review what programs it has added to the allowed list. I found that Webroot will not peacefully coexist with other spyware as they keep wrestling for control of programs so choose one or the other. And whent that happens you may loose internet access or email suddenly. So use it wisely or your guard dog will bite you as well as intruders. I also found its cheaper to buy new 3 user packs each year than pay the subscription renewal.

I bought Webroot Internet Security to get rid of some extra stubborn adware and viruses that infected my computer via a thumb drive. Well, it worked great to get rid of those issues. Since then (3 weeks) its become almost unbearable to live with and my computer is no slouch: 3.4Ghz dual core processor, 2Gbs of Ram, and a 10,000 rpm hard drive running XP Pro.

The Positives:

Extremely thorough. Lots of settings. Online backup included free.

The Negatives:

Takes forever (easily a couple minutes) to load at startup. Likes to freeze at the end of a sweep. When the program freezes, you can't terminate it from the Task Manager and if you try to, you will end up crashing freezing windows every time, which means you have to perform a hard reset. Intolerably intrusive. Every time my computer starts up I get the same messages asking me whether applications I have time and time before approved can connect to the internet. There is a feature in Webroot that is supposed to "learn" your habits and the programs that should be "trusted" but each time I have used it, as soon as the learning period is finished, it goes back to bothering me constantly. Memory intensive. If you are going to run Webroot, plan on closing other background programs to free up space. Webroot takes up the memory of Peer Guardian, AVG Anti-spyware, and Winamp Remote combined.

All in all, I'll probably uninstall Webroot. Its simply too slow and too irritating to use on a daily basis. It makes my computer feel like everything has to be checked and approved by Webroot, the effect is that everything seems to take longer. Its frustrating that such a product that works so well (when it works) also is such a pain to live with that its not worth installing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Webroot is excellent., December 9, 2009
This review is from: Webroot Internet Security Essentials [2010] [Old Version] (CD-ROM)
I had a terrible problem with my Norton Internet Security 2009 program allowing viruses into my computer. Did not want to take a chance with the 2010 version. Consulted with a couple of people and settled on webroot 2010 which detected 18 infections including a serious Trojan virus that had gone on undetected by Norton although I could tell something was wrong when I kept getting a non-descript pop-up warning me of malware and inviting me to install "anti-virus software." Very satisfied with this product, especially after reading of problems with the "K" brand which costs more.

My favorite so far, let's just hope it continues. I have tried many such as Kapersky, Symantic, Mcafee and so on. Webroot is really cool bc it catches cookies and virus attempts that others seem to allow to pass through. This is even when the firewall is set to allow all traffic. Not only is it much more aware, but its lighter on the system and it even backs up your computer's data (up to 2 gigs free) that you can select manually, if you would like.

Finally an internet security platform that I may actually go over 2 years with.

I purchased Webroot to replace Macafee that I got free through Comcast. Webroot does not slow down my computer like Macafee did when down loading updates. I have had no problems with the software yet and I am running it on 2 laptop computers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Beware of online backup, December 23, 2009

I bought this package to replace Windows Live Onecare because Webroot Essentials is rated very highly in comparisons with other packages, while WLO is not rated highly. I did not know that to backup my computer on my local backup drive with Webroot I would have to log onto an account at WebRoot each time. Webroot provides 2 Gb of backup space free, with what look like high fees for additional space. The free space is so small that for my purposes it is useless. You can use local backup, but I do not see a way to disconnect from constant reminders that you have not backed up to the online server and the constant need to log onto that server before backing up locally. This is irritating....

If I simply have not seen an obvious way to end the irritations, apologies to all. But for now, beware if you really dislike this kind of trap....

I'm totally pleased with this internet security software. It's easy to set up and has extra features that are great, such as Cleanup and Sweep. You don't even know it's there unless it finds a virus or a trojan horse. I will definitely renew when it's time. Oh, great price too!

It removed about 50 AD related material from my PC.
So far I am happy with the product.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cripples your computer, September 23, 2010
This review is from: Webroot Internet Security Essentials [2010] [Old Version] (CD-ROM)
Webroot has always done Spysweeper right and I made the mistake of getting this product.
It hogs 50% of my CPU and now with this latest program, I am being prevented from doing the most simple actions as installing and uninstalling trusted programs.
It is almost impossible to find on the task manager to temporarily stop for installs. A complete virus, avoid like the plague, I am about to uninstall this program so my computer can work again.
