phonics without the "program",
By A Customer
This review is from: Noah Webster's Reading Handbook (Paperback)
This is the best book I have come across for teaching a young child to read. I have used this book with three children, all at various ability levels. It is organized in an easy to use manner with clear instructions. This book allows the parent (or anyone) to sit with the child rather than instruct the child in a workbook. I would also recommend this book for anyone with an elementary age child that needs review, or who has reading difficulties. The progression allows for review as necessary.

I really love this little book. My oldest learned to read at 3 1/2, and we spend lots of time (and money) trying to find something that worked for her. A friend recommended this book, and we have thoroughly enjoyed it. It allows us (my oldest and me) to sit together and work on her reading. The improvement was immediate, and steady. I cannot believe the difference it makes if you use it daily, even just for 10-15 minutes.
I would highly recommend the Noah Webster's Reading Handbook to anyone with any age reader -- from very young readers to those working with adults beginning to read. It is very easy to understand, and self-paced. If it takes a few days for something to "click" then you can continue to work on it until it does. For homeschoolers (who often worry about teaching reading), this book is invaluable! Reading instruction in painless, and actually fun! (Plus, it's an inexpensive alternative to the phonics "programs" that often cost the moon and deliver very little in return.) To sum up -- it's easy, it's quick, it's effective, it's self-paced, it's inexpensive, and it's fun. Who could ask for more than that?

I just completed this curriculum with my 7yr old, and my 6yr old is 1/2 way through. Even though opposite in learning styles, my girls excelled with this book! It's so simple, easy to teach, easy for them to understand, and tangable. Each "lesson" is a page. The phonics-style teaching is so valuable! I have to admit, I even learned a thing or two about our English language while teaching. I couple this with the Amish readers (they're great too - kids get a real sense of accomplishment and success. The "I can read!" statements are celebrated by the whole family). I've tried over 6 different curriculum for phonics teaching, and this is by far my favorite. Affordable, clear, concise, phonics teaching.
