4.0 out of 5 stars Very low key romance with unexpected depth, August 11, 2006

I first read this back in the 60's when I was a teenager. It is long out of print and I ordered it used just to see if I would still like it.

It is an unusual romance that is hard for me to categorize. On the surface, it is the usual "secretary marries high powered tycoon she has been secretly in love with for years" modern romance. He wants a marriage of convenience. She agrees because half a loaf is better than none. The author avoids a lot of the cliches of that genre, however. There are no silly fights or misunderstandings. There are some real insights into this 'cold' business man's character, and how he got that way.

The heroine, Eliza, is also unusual for a romance novel. She is intelligent, mature, sensible, and secure in herself. While desperately in love with Dan, she tries her best to hold to the bargain she made, and make herself and Dan as happy as possible.

There is a villain and a murder mystery, but, of course, love triumps in the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wedding Bargain, February 16, 2007

This review is from: Wedding Bargain (Hardcover)
This is my favorite romance story of all time. The setting is 1930 which makes it "old fashioned" in every way. I read it at least twice a year. There is no bad language and no bedroom scenes! I highly recommend it, although, one might have to do some searching to find it since it's out of print.

4.0 out of 5 stars well worth the time it takes to read this one, October 26, 2010
i must admit i thought i would get bored by this book but, after reading the first couple pages,i was hooked!
it is 1933,new york and liza hanford has been in love with her employer, daniel
morgan for the eight years she has worked for him. so much to her shock one day, daniel asked her to marry him!!! so,what does she do? she gets married to dan(a millionaire).
i was half expecting liza to go crazy(out of her mind) with all that money but,she stayed level headed, only buying some new clothing and later they bought a house
together that they worked on-setting it up. liza comes to discover that dan was a quiet man who did not share his feelings that easily. dan also had a past that he kept hidden and did not talk about. liza accepts dan for who he is and loves him.
later, when a beautiful socialte is murdered and dan is accused of her murder,
liza reveals the full strength of her character. liza is a woman to be admired.
she grows from a quiet, dependable woman to a pillar of silent strength for
her husband in his time of need. the story of liza and dan is one to be
remembered for a long time.
