As a long time Cathy fan and a big time collector I have seen Cathy make up and break up with Irving, her longtime off and on beau. Through the thirty years that Cathy has been evolving into the woman she is now, I somehow knew that Irving would never be far out of her mind. Especially since he has made appearances in all of her comic books and most of her strips. The best thing about the couple is that they have changed a long way from the early seventies...Cathy was a self concious, overweight, depressed 20 something who wanted only to take care of a husband and have a family. Now she is a self made woman with a house, dog, good job, and security but still battling diets, clothing sizes, and mother's advice. Irving used to be a macho man interested in having Cathy wait on him hand and foot, get him food, and be supportive of his love for golf, football season, and his "man outings". Now he is a sensitive, supporting man who realizes his changes, and the time he has wasted by not finding out that Cathy was the one. Yet through the 30 years that they have been fighting, breaking up, making up, and loving each other, it has made for some hilarious moments and I could parallel a lot of their episodes in relationships I have had.
This wedding was inevitable, they finally let down their guard and celebrated their love. This collection is so funny. Its great because it shows the wedding preparations and the mothers and friends reactions. Plus Guisewite adds a bonus by including strips from different years showing the way they grew and changed which evolved into the engagement.
I love Guiswite's take on a single girl living her life and I was bummed when I found out Cathy was getting married. But this is a great collection and I will always be a fan of hers no matter what route her characters take.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cathy Finally Gets Her Man!, September 14, 2005

Being a Cathy fan since day one, I feel qualified to let potential readers know that this book is great! However long you have followed Cathy's life, you need to experience Cathy and Irving finally taking that last step. This book gives highlights of their years together (and apart) and will leave you feeling like you missed something by not being invited to their wedding! Bravo, Ms. Guisewite! I laughed out loud (as always).

Now I'll wait patiently for the next book...Cathy and Irving's House Hunting Extravaganza!

Irving shouts "Will you marry me!?" Cathy shouts back: "Yes!" And so begins my favorite cartoon couple's hilarious journey! I have been a fan of this strip for years, and was glad to see Cathy and Irving finally walk down the aisle. Hey we've seen her go through every other kind of angst (diet, bathing suit, Mom, work), why not the angst that goes with planning a wedding and preparing for marriage? Like the other books in my collection, this one does not disappoint. Cathy Guisewite is wonderful at keeping this strip fresh and topical, which is why I will remain a fan for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars I DIDN'T believe my eyes....!, October 19, 2005
This review is from: The Wedding of Cathy and Irving: A Cathy Collection (Paperback)
....Cathy actually got Irving to the altar! As a longtime Cathy fan, I thought that day would NEVER come! And her mother's reaction to their engagement was PRICELESS! Still, with both of their dueling insecurities, foibles, hang-ups...and YES, their dogs, I look forward to more mayhem in Cathy's ever-changing world!

5.0 out of 5 stars A collection of strips devoted to Cathy's wedding, October 11, 2005
This review is from: The Wedding of Cathy and Irving: A Cathy Collection (Paperback)
Cathy is a popular daily comic strip which has appeared for years - and one of Cathy's main concerns has been finding romance and love in life; so it's fitting that an entire book be devoted to her success in The Wedding Of Cathy And Irving, a collection of strips devoted to Cathy's wedding, from the lead-up to her saying 'yes' to a year of wedding planning leading up to the event. Cathy fans and any interested in marriage will find plenty to laugh at, here.

5.0 out of 5 stars An incredible book, December 26, 2008

This review is from: The Wedding of Cathy and Irving: A Cathy Collection (Paperback)
I have always loved the 'Cathy' comic strip. I have not been able to follow it for a number of years. I recently located a source and discovered that Cathy and Irving had finally tied the note. When I did a Google search, I came up with this book. I, of course immediately ordered it.

What a joy this is! The first time I read through it, I was laughing on almost every page, usually for more than one on a page. Cathy Guisewite makes impeccable observations on life and marriage. Having lived through my own marriage and the marriages of our four children, the insights and commentary she brings to the process of getting married were spot on.

I highly recommend this book. It will be a treasured possession for years.
