Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This is a dark novel, a study in grief, rather than the Amish romance that its title implies, in which the first of several tragedies ends Ella's wedding plans. Eicher (Rebecca's Promise), who has lived among the Amish, captures the tranquil pace of their life and their abiding desire to conform to God's will. But many aspects of the community he creates seem contrived. The plot turns partly on a rule that no one can marry before age 21, while most Amish encourage early marriage to discourage earlier sex. Nor is any otherwise sane Amish man likely to refuse an ambulance for his critically injured child because he considers its lights too flashy. A minister seems strangely arrogant for a faith whose signature virtue is humility, and an effort to push Ella into a hasty marriage also rings false. But Ella is a convincingly compassionate woman who will hold readers' interest as she struggles to find God's hand in her loss. The story ends with a chance for a new start and a gentle cliffhanger to be resolved in the next book in Eicher's Little Valley series. (Feb.)

A Wedding Quilt for Ella by Jerry S. Eicher tells the tale of Ella Yoder, a young woman whose life in the Amish community seems well established. She is ready to leave childhood behind and marry the man she loves. They are getting ready to build the home where they will live together. Their families are excited too. Before any of that can happen, tragedy strikes and her beloved is taken from her. There's her heartache of crushed dreams and reminders of him around every corner. There are questions of "what next" for a young Amish woman. At the same time, her community is turned upside down by seems to be a series of traumatic events. The quilt Ella was making for her new husband and home still rests on the frame, partially done. As Ella decides to finish it, she gets inspiration and courage to face her new life.

Overall, this book is a pleasant read. The characters are well developed. There are enough issues raised to maintain the reader's interest. Ella and the community must face the question of God's love, something many people can relate to. Parts of the book are very thought provoking, but not preachy. As this is book one of the Little Valley series, so there is much more of Ella to come, but this book can also stand alone without the others of the series.

A Wedding Quilt for Ella is written by Jerry S. Eicher and published by Harvest House. Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher. I have read another of Jerry's books "Rebecca's Choice" and really enjoyed it. Jerry write about the Amish a little different than the other authors that I have read. He does not use as many German words and it is better to understand.

Ella and Aden are planning their wedding but they have to wait until Ella turns twenty-one, they both have been baptised into the Amish church and just have to wait. Meanwhile Aden is working with his own business building houses and has a crew to help alone with his brother Daniel. He get sick with his side hurting but refuses to go to the doctor and when he did go it was too late, his appendix had burst a few days before and the poison had gone all thought his body and even with surgery at Tri-County hospital he could not be saved, This entire book is about Ella and how she handles the healing process of losing his only love and on she did love him so much. Ella was working on her quilt for their home together now does she want to finish it, so just put it up somewhere.

As the story progresses the young people all talk about things happened in threes and they wondered who else was going to die. I have always heard this also and it does seen to happen a lot of the time.

There are more things that happen and there are others that die or get killed in the area and too the Amish community. Life had to go one and so many chores had to be done that no one really had the time to think too much about "what might happen". Before long Ella had a visitor and her mama took him down to the basement to talk to him, it was a young man that is a Bishop and he wants to ask for Ella's hand in marriage.

An interesting story, and it's a good clean read. I don't have to worry about coming across swear words and scenes that make me uncomfortable.

I really enjoyed this story but I am left wondering what's next? The tragedy and sadness was terrible. The story itself was great. I feel like I was left hanging.
