another delightfully funny and dramatic read from katie fforde,
By
This review is from: Wedding Season (Mass Market Paperback)
I am a huge fan of Katie Fforde, and I'm in the midst of planning a wedding, so I eagerly awaited my copy of Wedding Season to arrive from interlibrary loan. As usual, Katie did not disappoint.
Wedding Season followed three friends: Sarah, a wedding planner whose secretly pregnant sister and a major U.S. movie star have decided to get married on the same day with only a few months notice; Bron, a hairstylist in an unhappy relationship; and Elsa, a talented dressmaker. The three consider themselves friends and co-workers of sorts, as they often work the same weddings. It was refreshing to have three main characters, and thus three romances going on. Katie Fforde writes consistently delightful modern, British romantic comedy of manners novels. Her heroines always manage to be easy to relate to, yet inspiring and independent. It was refreshing to see these three learn to rely on one another and a few other helpful hands along the way. As a bride to be, I appreciated all of the laborious details of weddings. I find novels about wedding planning infinitely more helpful than the actual wedding planning books I've read thus far! Also, Katie Fforde is on twitter (@katiefforde), and she responds to reads, which is amazing.

Light and Sweet Like a Delicious Piece of Wedding Cake!,

This review is from: Wedding Season: A Novel (Hardcover)
I really enjoyed reading Wedding Season! The novel features wedding planner Sarah who, ironically, does not believe that she will ever find love. Her two friends, Elsa and Bron, are in the wedding business as well and are also unlucky in love. I really liked reading about all three of these characters, their fun jobs, and their love(less) lives.
Just when Sarah thinks that another wedding season has come to an end, she agrees to plan two more weddings on the same day and in only two months. One is for a major movie star and the other is for Sarah's own sister. The interactions between Sarah and her sister are great to read about, as Sarah's sister wants a fairy tale wedding on a limited budget and is driving Sarah absolutely nuts. If you have ever planned or are currently planning a wedding or think you may have to plan one someday soon, you will revel in all of the details that wedding planning entails and that Fforde chronicles in this engaging read. As the wedding planning busily continues, the three friends meet a few men who may just change their minds about love. The romances that develop are sweet, touching, and a little sexy too! The novel is fun to read as Sarah, Elsa, and Bron seem to really find themselves (and possibly love) while crazily trying to pull off two weddings on the same day. This book is definitely light and fun, but it is also intelligently written. It was released at the perfect time, as probably a lot of readers are looking for a breezy beach read for the Spring and Summmer seasons! I highly recommend Wedding Season and hope you enjoy it!

A celebrity wedding cements three friend's relationships, when the wedding planner Sarah, asks two friends to help with the event. Elsa, the dressmaker, has helped Sarah with wedding creations at another wedding, and Bron, a hairdresser and makeup artist, has as well. When an American film star asks Sarah to plan her English wedding, Sarah, Bron and Elsa come together to plan a large, celebrity wedding.
They also fall in love along the way with various men who they have met at a previous weddings. This is a frothy and enjoyable story for light reading.

A little different take for Fforde in that there are three women whom the story revolves around with of course, three male interests. Good characters, fun story and the usual angst over impending deadlines.

Disappointed Fan,
This review is from: Wedding Season: A Novel (Hardcover)
For once I did not like this Katie Fforde book. I am a huge fan of hers, but this book really does seem like it was written by someone else entirely. Lacked character development and all the details she normally is so good at that help to create the scene and interest and develop the characters. Dialog is boring and I lost interest and had to make myself finish one!

What a delightful book. The thing i love the most about Miss Katie's books is the English view of everyday living and adventures in each one. This is one of my favourites of hers - definitely going in the re-read pile. (Flora's Lot/Bidding for Love was similar, but one is even lighter)
How to describe? It's like a lovely refreshing breeze on an warm summer's day, or that perfect light lemony creamy dessert after a meal... i find myself smiling just to reminisce over all the adventures. So here i am, waiting for the next one! :)

What's happened to Katie Fforde's novels?,

I've always been a huge fan of Katie Fforde, immmensely enjoying the humor, dry wit and charm of her stories in her earlier novels. Her last three or four novels unfortunately have been either boringly predictable or unrealistic; this book having three romances starting simultaneously to three newly-formed perfect friends was just too trite for words. I couldn't agree more with Publisher's Weekly review on this book.

Not my favorite Fforde,
This review is from: Wedding Season: A Novel (Hardcover)
I had been waiting for this book to be available at my local library for so long. And it finally arrived. I looked for ways to ignore my husband and kids, and my job, just so I could read it. And it was disappointing. Obviously, having read previous Fforde books, yes, they can get quite predictable, but I don't mind that, I'm looking for that cute ending that I know will arrive.
I think having 3 main characters meant the story was spread too thin. I never fully got to know very well Sarah, Bron and Elsa. They were almost like cardboard characters and of course the guys were even worse. I wanted to know so much more about Hugo, the mysterious photographer. And why or when did he start seeing Sarah in a new light? The book implies they have worked together for a while, but doesn't really explain much more. And one thing I could not forgive of Sarah is that no matter what, family comes first. And if you have agreed on attending your sister's wedding, not only as a sister but also as a wedding planner, you don't also agree to somebody else's wedding on the same day. Don't care how much money you'll make. You just don't do it. Either try to convince your sister to change it, or scrap the famous wedding. So I couldn't connect with her character or Elsa and Bron, who seemed to have very mousy and weak personalities.

I thought the Publishers Weekly review was overly harsh. I also disagreed with Book List's review. The women were NOT uniformly sweet, they were all quite different. I would not describe Sarah or Bron as "sweet" although perhaps Elsa fits the bill! I have all of Katie Fforde's novels and really love her work. Like so many other authors, I find her earlier works the most gripping; for example The Rose Revived, her second novel, features three women whose characters and romances are nicely unpredictable.
Since Wedding Season has three female protagonists, all covered with about the same level of detail, some of the depth was altered to breadth. However I really liked how their friendship formed and how they supported and encouraged each other. I was interested in the details about wedding planning, particularly in the English setting. I also enjoyed reading about how each of the women overcame their biggest obstacle, themselves, to reach for happiness. The great thing is that we get to see Sarah, Fenella, Rupert, and the Catering Ladies again as side characters in her following book, Love Letters, about a music and literary festival set at Somerby, where the celebrity wedding was held. I enjoy the gentle read offered by Katie Fforde, along with a lack of smut! Love scenes, while present are NOT graphically described and there is a gentle humor throughout that is so refreshing.

something was off.,
This review is from: Wedding Season: A Novel (Hardcover)
I'm a huge katie fforde fan. I love all of her books but something was off with this one. While I would categorize it as a pretty good chick-lit its not up to the higher standard usually set by katie fforde. I found myself skimming sections and wonder about the characters. I wonder if there were just to many main characters and as a result not enough time to develope them all. I just never really embraced any of them, while I could relate to them, I just couldn't find myself falling in love with even one of them. The humor I normally find in her books was also not quite there. This was an entertaining read, I just don't know if I'll ever re-read. I'm glad that I got this at the library and din't purchase.
