4.0 out of 5 stars The Wedding Singer
I am not generally an Adam Sandler fan, but this film really surprised me. I liked it very much, and the music used brought back a lot of good memories. He plays a down on his luck wedding singer that is left at the alter, and when he meets Julia played by Drew Barrymore, sparks fly. I was very surprised by the chemistry Sandler and Barrymore have on screen. A romance...

2.0 out of 5 stars A classic example of DNR ruining HD video!
I would love to give this title 4 stars for content since it's definitely one of Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore's best comedies so far, but once again the ugly face of Digital Noise Reduction (DNR) has reared its head.

I would love to give this title 4 stars for content since it's definitely one of Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore's best comedies so far, but once again the ugly face of Digital Noise Reduction (DNR) has reared its head.

Though the colorful and vibrant 80's primary palette absolutely pops and is a virtual knockout in HD, and the 24 bit/48 kHz Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track lets the classic pop tunes sound spectacular, while trying to get rid of all traces of grain (which is a natural byproduct of film and contains high frequency detail), some telecine moron also got rid of most or all of the fine detail you would expect from true 1080p video (2 million+ pixels) rendering faces to wax dummy status. Plus, this healthy dose of DNR creates smearing and noise artifacts in moving objects, especially pronounced in close ups.

This and the Blu-rays of "Patton" and "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" should be used at all telecine transfer schools as examples of what NOT to do when prepping a film or TV program for HD video.

Don't waste your money like I did!

5.0 out of 5 stars Adam Sandler's smartest movie? Yes, and by far his best!, August 1, 2000
This was one of Adam's breakthrough films before pointless blockbusters like "Waterboy" and "Big Daddy". While those films have a few funny moments and are OK, this one is very cleaver and showcases Sandler as a human being rather than just some dumb hick or just some loud bastard.

"The Wedding Singer" is about Robbie Hart, an average guy, that lives a simple suburban life with a hot fiancée and a cool gig in the mid eighties. Life is great until his lady dumps him. He's crushed and his career as a weeding singer goes down the toilet as he sinks into a depression that includes listening to The Cure. Sounds like a great depression. Anyway, a young girl named Julie (Drew Barrymore) helps him to get his life back together. The only problem is that she is engaged to a smug yuppie loser. So what's going to happen. Well, like in most eighties comedies, the hero will try to win over the girl even if it takes the help of Billy Idol!

Not the most original story in the world, and the chemistry is only OK between Drew and Adam, but its really all the eighties jokes that make this film so very funny. People have niches and dress in styles. People dress up like "characters" like Madonna, Don Johnson, Boy George and even the guy from Flock of Seagulls. The combination of an awesome soundtrack and '80s clichés, not to mention great acting (Steve Buschemi's cameo steals the show) make the film a winner. Adam can really act like a normal romantic and this movie proves it. Too bad so many people prefer him as a moron. Comedy lovers and Sandler fanatics unite and buy this film.

1.0 out of 5 stars Why do I need another copy of this?, April 25, 2006
By
This review is from: The Wedding Singer - Totally Awesome Edition (DVD)
Added
- 5 whole minutes
- Documentary about how to make a great movie suck by making it a Broadway production.

Deleted
- Karaoke version of five songs from the soundtrack: Hold Me Now, Do You Really Want to Hurt Me, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, Rappers Delight, White Wedding

Worth the extra $13 - I think not

I suppose if you are one of the four people on the planet that doesn't own this classic there is a option of which edition to purchase, for the rest of us, it's just not worth it.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Big Disappointment For A Blu-Ray, March 11, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Great Movie - Love it and already own it on DVD. I purchased the Blu-Ray for what I thought would be extra features. That was a big bust. All there was extra, was a big advertisement for what seems to be the lame broadway show being made from the movie. So, I end up feeling ripped off. This was not the, as advertised, "Totally Awesome Edition".

i am quite the fan of this movie the only problem i see with this dvd release is that it has less features than the original release. on this edition it says 5 mins of extra footage... waaa hooo! 5 whole mins?? the old edition has a ton of extras including trivia game and karaoke. the new edition doesnt say much for features. if it is a higher quality transfer or not i dont know but the only point that should sell this dvd is the extra 5 minutes because it is actually lacking in bonus material. i was just about to pre-order and i was like wait. whats on the new version. i didnt get too excited so im keeping my old school copy. i encourage anyone readin this to do the same.

This is one of my favorite comedies, and was suprised to see it on Blu Ray for such a great price,it has great PQ and sound but the extras are seriuosly lacking(with only a featurette about the Wedding Singer Musical and the Theatrical Trailer) with this release especially since it's called the "Totally Awesome Edition"! This has the unrated version which is a few minutes longer than the thaetrical cut. Glad I kept my original 1998 DVD because my family enjoyed the Karaoke Tracks that were included and the 80's Trivia and Photo Gallery,If you have the original DVD my advice is keep it beacuse all those great extars are AWOL with this Blu Ray,with all the space on a Blu disc they could have easily put all the goodies on there, but not this time! 5 stars for the great movie,3 for the Blu ray!

5.0 out of 5 stars An all-time fave, June 9, 2000
This review is from: The Wedding Singer (DVD)
One of the few movies that star a leading man and lady that actually have some spectacular chemistry between them! I swear the Adster and Drew had a crush on each other during the filming, because the smiles are so big, I cant imagine them disappearing once the cameras stopped rolling! Maybe theyre just too good. I had already seen Adam Sandler in some of his more boyish films, so it was great to see his romantic side! (without taking that hilarious temper away from him)

Being a big fan of the 80's I loved all the music and the fact that it was set in that era (hey, I saw a period piece!) but everyone in it was so exuberant and lively that it wouldnt have mattered either way! Maybe they were that happy cos they got to be 80's people - I dont know.

Drew Barrymore was also adorable and you just wanted to bang their heads together - their attraction to each other was like a first love, also filled with great respect and friendship.

But hey, I could go on about it all forever.

I like a lot of the crazy twisted humour - makes you smile. Sometimes the plot wanders a little bit, but Im only saying that because its true!

Just the thing to put a big smile on your face, really! And who could resist Robbie Hart and his quirky romantic songs? Aaahh...

5.0 out of 5 stars Sandler at his best, December 3, 1999

There's nothing quite like a good, light semi-romantic comedy set in the 1980's. Literally, there is nothing quite like it. Adam Sandler lights up the screen in his role as an unintentionally charming wedding singer. The story never gets dull; it's funny and easy watch throughout. And the likeable characters (and DISlikeable ones--"Mr. Gulia") add to the film's viewer-friendliness. This is without a doubt the highlight of Sandler's career.

This is a typical Adam Sandler movie--full of laughs and entertainment. If you like revisiting the 80s with the music--Boy George, Billy Idol and Frankie Goes to Hollywood, you'll enjoy this. Adam plays a wedding singer that was stood up at the altar. Drew Barrymore play a waitress that is about to marry a "Miami Vice" wannabe. As you may have guessed the two realize they were meant for each other and the rest is pure good entertainment. It was fun to reminisce about those 80s. I'm a wedding photographer and I must say the kind of gigs the wedding singer did and the people he encountered, were so typical and realistic--especially table 9! Anyways, not the most technically perfect movie, but full of good Adam Sandler comedy. I had to watch this movie again. I laugh a lot everytime I see it...
