My fiance was a best man in a wedding recently and had never given a speech before. So I bought this book and another one. Boy am I glad that I bought the other book, because this one was no help at all. It only gives you examples of specific toasts and speeches for specific families. It doesn't help. It's not generic enough for someone to put together their own speech from it. It doesn't tell you how to write a speech or do's and don'ts about writing toasts. I would not recommend this book to anyone. If you want a good book for this, buy The Best Man's Handbook. It has way more useful information on speeches and toasts than most speech books.

I used this book exclusively to write the Best Man's toast for my friend's wedding. I'm comfortable with public speaking so did not need too many pointers there (though that is included), but I did need some direction on specific things to either include or avoid. The book gives a few different approaches to writing the speech based on the type of relationship (friend, sibling) and the formality and size of the wedding. It also includes a few different scenarios, for instance, making sure to acknowledge grandparents who have passed away. This book was great at touching on the different areas you might otherwise forget to consider as you're agonizing over the minutiae.

Overall, this book is aimed at VERY formal wedding occasions, but I was able to adapt it to the more modern, casual wedding I was attending. This book gives plenty of examples of things to avoid, so I'm unsure whether the other reviewer actually read the book... I was initially considering a much different approach for my speech which would have singled out a few specific events which were indicative of our friendship. I opted to briefly summarize how we became and remained friends over the years, and how those traits would related to his suitability as a partner and companion in his marriage. My speech was a success: it had people laughing and yet remained true to the purpose of the toast, which is to solidify in everyone's minds that the couple is right for each other.
