2.0 out of 5 stars meant for an older crowd, June 29, 2004

This is a deck of cards, not a book. The questions are tailored for a generation or 2 before us. Not recommended.

I decided to break tradition a little. After the guests, not all of whom know one another, have visited and eaten and gathered for the gift opening, there can be that somewhat awkward time when the bride is actually unwrapping a gift and there is a lag in conversation. That's when I'd ask the room one of these fun questions.

The first one who called out an answer that came even CLOSE was handed a token (in this case I got out my bottle of flower arranging stones... the little glass rocks that you can put in a vase before you stick in the flowers to hold them up. But you could use absolutely anything. I thought candies would work or poker chips or even little favors of some kind.) I was very generous with the tokens, so if I heard more than one right answer, more than one person got a token. At a couple of points, I awarded tokens for sheer audacity, silliness, comedic value or, in the case of a blushing groom's Mom, naughtiness.

Then we'd pause and admire the bride's gift as I was very careful to keep bringing the room back to focus on the bride and on each gift and its giver as the gifts were opened.

Then, when the bride picked up another gift to open, I'd ask another question.

Some of the answers they made up got quite hilarious, which would not have been as appreciated if we'd been quietly writing. Once the bride had opened her last gift, whichever two guests had the most stones got a prize.

Three of the guests said they'd never had so much fun at a shower and the bride gave me a huge hug in thanks and said she loved not having everyone stare at her in relative quiet while she unwrapped each gift. And, as "Mistress of Ceremonies" I also had a lot of fun.

Thumbs up. The questions were fun and just tough enough or silly enough to be a bit challenging.

We ended up not using this for my sister's shower...we found it was too difficult to hold everyone's attention. Maybe it would better for smaller groups?
