From Booklist

As Claire Linden and Max O'Connell stand before the minister who will marry them, Max is shot and killed. Claire, a patient of psychotherapist Cassidy McCabe, asks Cassidy and her husband, investigative reporter Zach Moran, to find the killer, hoping to clear the chief suspect, her ex-husband, whom she believes is innocent. As Cassidy and Zach delve into the case, they find that Max wasn't the upstanding citizen he appeared to be; in fact, there are numerous people who might have wanted him dead, including two sisters, an angry employee, and the co-owner of Max's restaurant. With Zach threatening to expose the suspects' secrets in his paper, Cassidy has the leverage she needs to get them to talk, but as she comes closer to the truth, the killer turns his attention to her. This series, set in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park, uses local color well and profits from an appealing heroine. Some rather stilted dialogue gets in the way here, but series fans will find much to enjoy. Sue O'Brien

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun great cozy mystery to read, March 15, 2006
This review is from: Wedding's Widow: The Seventh Cassidy McCabe Mystery (Cassidy McCabe Mysteries) (Hardcover)
Cassidy McCabe is a psychotherapist in Oak Park, outside of Chicago. Cassidy has been treating Claire Linden through the divorce of her abusive ex-husband. Now Claire is finally remarrying and Cassidy and her husband Zach, a reporter, are attending the wedding.

At the outdoor wedding, Max O'Connell, the groom, is shot before the vows can be completed. Claire is devastated. She asks Cassidy and Zach to help find out who killed Max. Her ex-husband is a prime suspect, but she doesn't believe he did it. Cassidy and Zach have helped solve a few crimes before, so they accept.

As they start uncovering Max's past, they find things were not quite as they seemed. He was deeply in debt and suspects begin to start stacking up. Can Cassidy and Zach sort through the suspects and find the killer? Cassidy is being followed and threatened quite regularly. She refuses to give up the investigation. Can Zach keep her safe?

I had never read anything by this author before. I really enjoyed this book. I found myself continuously picking it back up to read another chapter to figure out who did it. I thought the abundance of suspects was well written. I did not figure out who did it before the killer was unmasked.

I like Cassidy and Zach. They are well written and their interaction is great. Just enough strife to make it interesting, but yet not so much that I got frustrated with them.

I highly recommend this book and can't wait to read another!

5.0 out of 5 stars Winner of WordWeaving Award for Excellence (for a series), November 27, 2003
This review is from: Wedding's Widow: The Seventh Cassidy McCabe Mystery (Cassidy McCabe Mysteries) (Hardcover)
Despite her misgivings, Cassidy McCabe agrees to attend client Claire Linden's wedding. Claire had divorced an abusive husband and found new love in the three years she had been seeing Cassidy. But her fiancé seems a bit too good to be true. Tragically, Cassidy and husband reporter Zach Moran do not celebrate Claire's wedding but witness the groom's murder.

Just as the couple begins to speak their vows a shot rings out. Tragically, Max dies in his bride's arms. Having previously heard of Cassidy and Zach's sleuthing abilities, Claire appeals to Cassidy for their assistance. She wants them to investigate what appears to a professional hit. Soon they learn of a multitude of suspects who might want Max dead. Worse, their questions lead to a stalker who threatens Cassidy's life.

In the seventh Cassidy McCabe mystery WEDDING'S WIDOW, author Alex Matthews once again proves her excellence at creating well constructed mystery and a cast of characters readers cannot help but love. The irrepressible cat Starshine makes her appearance with feline grace and Cassidy's marvelous grandmother likewise lends zest to the tale. As Cassidy and Zach's relationship matures, the inevitable strains of daily living take a toll even as their affection binds them tightly. Their teamwork as investigators continues to strengthen as well. Moreover, the antagonist proves to be a bit of conundrum, making it hard to hate such a likeable fellow. With the rich nuances and subtle paradoxes that make life such a marvelous challenge, we award the Cassidy McCabe Mystery Series the WORDWEAVING AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE.

5.0 out of 5 stars terrific Cassidy McCabe mystery, May 11, 2003
This review is from: Wedding's Widow: The Seventh Cassidy McCabe Mystery (Cassidy McCabe Mysteries) (Hardcover)
Nobody can be happier than psychotherapist Cassidy McCabe that her client Claire Linden is getting married again. In the three years that Claire has been going to Cassidy, she divorced her abusive husband, learned how to stand on her own two feet and how to trust another man. Ignoring the warning bells that go off in her head indicating Max is too good to be true, Cassidy and her reporter husband Zach Moran agree to attend the wedding.

When the couple is about to say their vows, a shot rings out and Max keels over. He is the dead victim of a professional hit. An upset Claire pleads with Cassidy and Zach to find out who killed her groom. The pair agree having experience in solving high profile homicides in the past. During the course of their investigations they learn that Max had many enemies who would want him dead. Almost as soon as they start asking questions, Cassidy acquires a stalker who warns her off the investigations if she wants to see tomorrow.

This is the seventh Cassidy McCabe mystery and it is absolutely terrific. The characters have grown and changed in ways that make their marriage a joyous celebration of life and them more of a team on this investigation than before. Zach realizes he can't control Cassidy and she knows that there are times it is better to give in then argue. The victim in this novel wasn't a bad man, just a flawed one who managed to get the wrong person angry. Alex Matthews is a talented author who knows how to keep her series fresh and challenging.
