An Honest Man, November 25, 2010
This review is from: Wedemeyer Reports! (Paperback)
This book was a pleasure to read. As I read I couldn't help but sense that Gen. Wedemeyer was an honest man who loved his country and did everything in his power to advance the cause for peace. He also doesn't hesitate to admit his own failures and mistakes. The book contains Wedemeyer's experience before WWII, his stint at the German War College, the European invasion, post WWII, and finally China and Korea. Absolutely excellent information from his perspective. Gen. Wedemeyer doesn't pull any punches. He criticizes F.D.R., Churchill, the British, the Soviet Union, Gen. Marshall, etc.
I also read things that fascinated me; things you won't read in a history book. For example, Churchill running into Eleanor Roosevelt in his bathrobe, a scuffle between Ambassador Hurley and Wedemeyer staff member McClure that almost involved a fist fight in front of the Chinese military staff, and finally Wedemeyer meeting F.D.R. near the end of a war describing Roosevelt as being incoherent and picking at his food.
Of course, the sad ending of the story is our appeasement to Communism after the war. Our betrayal of China and Korea is unbelievable. Gen. Wedemeyer understanding the implications of our policy, decides to publicly tell the truth to the American people in defiance of his former boss Gen. Marshall, Pres. Truman, and the State Dept. He did this knowing full well it would cost him his career. His final report on the situation in China and Korea is suppressed by Marshall, and so we ended up with the Korean War and China ruled by the Communists.
Gen. Wedemeyer, an honest man who tried to do the right thing, sought peace in his time, and fought first for American interests. An inspirational life to any true red blooded American.
