Amazing Quality, Amazing Characters,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Wednesday Comics (Hardcover)
If you are a fan of any of the characters in this book you should really do yourself a favor and check this out. These stories are all told in a great narrative unique to the different stories, the unique page structure builds on top of that. The book itself is great quality the pages are crisp, the binding is sewn and the book can lie flat perfectly. Finally some of these pages really take shape when you sit them next to each other. When they were being released in issues you only got one page and unless you took your comics apart the pages never truly lie next to each other. The most prominent case of this is with the Metamorpho chapter, the periodic table of elements looks just great.
All in all it really is another successful DC experiment and really shows and reminds us that DC can still be a lot of fun.

Let me start off by saying this is an incredibly beautiful and large book. The art is some of the best and truly unique I've seen in comics to date. To me, the only real downfall is how the stories fit in with the rest of the book. Wednesday Comics ran for 12 weeks (one page per week per story). So basically each story is only 12 pages long and each page needed to sustain the reader each week. I never felt like it was enough time to flesh out anything meaningful. I don't blame the writers as there were some amazing talent on this project (i.e Brian Azzarello). I blame the format. If it wasn't for the giant artwork, I don't think any of these stories would have been worth the time to read. Especially individually. This book is really just the sum of its parts.

One of my best purchases,
This review is from: Wednesday Comics (Hardcover)
I ordered a copy of Wednesday Comics and was amazed at how big the box is it came in. An absolutely beautiful book well worth the money I spent on the book. Well worth the price Amazon is asking. A must for any comics lover and especially those that appreciate the artistic nature of the books themselves.

Breath-takingly Amazing!,
This review is from: Wednesday Comics (Hardcover)
I just got my copy (perfect condition by the way - Thanks Amazon) of Wednesday Comics - and it exceeded all of my expectations! I remember reading these stories in 2009, as each issue came out over the course of 12 weeks, and thinking to myself "Thank you DC for taking a chance on this format and Thank you Mark Chiarello (Edititorial Art Director) for intelligently driving this vision forward - masterful!" And now I find myself saying "Thank you" again for having the courage and insight to collect this fantastic experiment in a HUGE hardcover that does a great job of replicating these oversized adventures an all their colored glory! Not only is this a giant book but it's also so well designed - the colors are bright, the pages crisp, the binding is tight (yes, the pages are sewn), even the end pages are eye catching. Do yourself a favor, and buy this book! You will not be disappointed!

The stories contained in this Huge and Beautiful collection were originally presented in a "newspaper" like format. Each character featured in this experiment had an entire giant page devoted to thier story. The stories themselves were great, but what captured my attention the most was how great the art looked in this oversized format. The detail and craftmanship that went into these stories, both written and drawn, was amazing. I own all 12 of the original single issue releases, but when I saw that this run was being collected in an oversized, hard cover edition... I couldn't resist! The collected edition maintains the size, and beauty, of the individual issues. If you are looking for a fun and unique way to introduce yourself to some of DC's coolest charachters, from the ever popular Superman and Batman to the lesser known Metamorpho and Adam Strange, presented by hottest writters and artists of today, this collection will not dissapoint.

Mark Chiarello gets my vote for the best editor in comics, the fact he got this incredible project in our hands is a testament to how much he loves this medium.....its a fantastic book, best of the year hands down, and the crazy oversized format is gorgeous and showcases the artwork beautifully. The content and the price make this the funnest purchase you'll make on Amazon today! Kamandi by Sook and Lopez' and Nowlan's Metal Men are my two favorite standouts!

This is What a Graphic Novel is Supposed to Be Like!,
By
This review is from: Wednesday Comics (Hardcover)
This was a really great concept by DC comics, but I wasn't about to pay $4 a week for a newspaper formatted book. I knew to wait for the collected edition. This book is spectacular! There are hit or miss stories in this, but the hits outweight the misses. Some of the art is spectacular as well. I only have one real problem with it and that is one of the reasons it works so well... the size! It is really hard to read a book this size comfortably, except sitting down at a table with the book in front of you. I know that it defeats the purpose, but I'm hoping they put out a smaller trade size edition. Some of the stories will lose their impact, but it will be an easier way to enjoy it. What I loved most about this book is the use of some of the lower tier DC characters you don't normally see used. To break down the individual stories, my favorite had to be Kamandi. He's a character I love, the story was pretty stock, but well done and the art was fantastic. Speaking of fantastic art, the Adam Strange story had the look of a European graphic novel. Beautiful stuff! The story was very engaging as well. Other standouts for art and story were the Superman and Supergirl ones. Supergirl was a very light hearted story. It was funny and a joy to read, with some beautiful art as well. Another one in that same camp is the Metal Men story. Both are great ones for kids of all ages. Ones I thought missed the mark are Wonder Woman. I didn't even read it. The pages were a mess of word balloons and poor page layout that had me wanting to skip it. Also, I thought the Teen Titans was a miss. There were some average ones, like Batman and Metamorpho (which surprised me being that the great Neil Gaiman wrote it), but all in all, most of this book is enjoyable and well worth a read and definitely worth a purchase!

The BEST Collection to come out of comics in years!,
By Fred Dailey (Maryville, TN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wednesday Comics (Hardcover)
Wednesday Comics is a true treasure. The artwork, the stories, simply the best work a major publisher has released in the last two decades. The quality of this book is unbelievable. This is the kind of book you want to leave out so that everyone can thumb through it. This is what makes comics great.
Now, do not order it from Amazon. My wife ordered this for me as a gift, the first copy I received was badly damaged on the lower corner. We returned it and documented the reason, only to receive another copy today and have the upper corner smashed in. This is too beautiful a book to have a damaged copy. The $20.00 discount from buying a copy from Amazon is simply not worth it. Go buy a copy at your local comic store or book store. Having a copy of this collection is worth the $49.99.

To the point, this was a really fun read. I read these when they were being released in their newsprint form. The collection is beautifully done. The artwork is great, the stories are a little on the hit or miss side. Some were really good other were just okay. The only downside to this collection is putting it on a shelf is quite difficult due to it's size. I would recommend this collection, I had a lot of fun reading it.

A fabulous looking comic,

Well, the presentation and the artwork here was just incredibly good throughout. I like the fact that they retained a unique look for each different comic character strip. Some of the artwork may have featured just too many panels for my taste. The stories were typically DC type, slightly staid.
I give this a 4 star, mostly for the artwork and presentation. |
